Laurie Penny is a British journalist and author who was born Laura Barnett on September 28, 1986. The Guardian, The New York Times, and Salon are just a few of the outlets for which Penny has written stories. Penny has written for American television programs like The Haunting of Bly Manor and The Nevers. She is a contributing editor at the New Statesman and the author of several books on feminism.

Penny was raised in Lewes and Brighton before being born in London to two lawyers of Irish, Jewish, and Maltese ancestry. Penny battled anorexia as a kid and was admitted to the hospital at the age of 17. In their book Unspeakable Things, they discussed the event from a feminist viewpoint after they had recovered from the illness.
Prior to attending Wadham College in Oxford to study English, Penny attended the independent school Brighton College.

Personal life
In 2015, Penny came out as polyamorous, pansexual, and genderqueer. They/them pronouns are preferred by Penny, who indicated this preference in 2020. She/her pronouns are also used, but they believe they are “less accurate”.
