Rich Paul Biography

Rich Paul (born December 16, 1981) is a sports agent and the founder of Klutch Sports Group in the United States. He is well-known as a long-time friend and agent for NBA player LeBron James, and he is regarded as one of sports’ most powerful agents.

Rich Paul Early life

Paul grew up in Glenville, a district on Cleveland’s east side, in a one-bedroom apartment above his father’s store, R & J Confectionery, on East 125th and Arlington. His father enrolled him in Benedictine, a private, fee-paying Roman Catholic high school. In 1999, his father died of cancer.

After graduating from high school, Paul was coached in the sale of antique jerseys by Distant Replays owner Andy Hyman. He’d acquire throwback jerseys in Atlanta and sell them from his trunk in Cleveland. He met LeBron James at the Akron-Canton Airport in 2002, and James was impressed by Paul’s genuine Warren Moon vintage jersey. After exchanging phone numbers, Paul sold James a Magic Johnson Lakers jersey and a Joe Namath Rams jersey.

Rich Paul Career

Following the 2003 NBA draft, Paul, along with James’ boyhood buddies Maverick Carter and Randy Mims, became part of James’ tight inner group. He would later begin working for Creative Artists Agency under Leon Rose, who had negotiated James’ contract extension with the Cavaliers in 2006. Paul and James left Rose and CAA in 2012 to create their own firm, Klutch Sports Group.[5] In 2013, Paul hired long-time agent and attorney Mark Termini to handle Klutch’s NBA contract negotiations.

Klutch Sports had a portfolio of 25 clients by the end of Termini’s tenure in 2020, and Termini had managed talks on over $1 billion in NBA contracts for those clients.[2][8] Later that year, United Talent Agency (UTA) made a strategic investment in Klutch Sports Group and requested Paul to oversee its sports branch, which he expanded from 4 to 23 clients. He assumed a position on UTA’s board of directors in 2020.

Before the start of the 2017-18 season, Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver told Paul that if he did not cut ties with head coach Earl Watson, who was represented by Paul and the Klutch Sports Group at the time, he would fire Watson. Watson was fired on October 22, after the Suns started 0-3 with two blowout losses (including the worst loss in franchise history and the worst season opening performance in NBA history), and was replaced on an interim basis by associate head coach Jay Triano for the rest of the season.

This narrative was eventually included in a big report on Sarver on September 13, 2022, which culminated in his year-long suspension from the NBA and, eight days later, Sarver agreeing to sell the Suns and Phoenix Mercury to a new owner.  On December 20, 2022, Sarver sold his part in the team as well as some further minority stakes to a new ownership group led by Mat Ishbia and his older brother Justin Ishbia, which was declared public on February 8, 2023.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) amended its agent requirements in August 2019, requiring them to have a bachelor’s degree. The media dubbed it the “Rich Paul Rule,” and it was widely interpreted as a jab at Paul for not having graduated from college and for working with a high school prospect Darius Bazley, who chose to work as an intern for New Balance for a year before entering the 2019 NBA draft rather than attend Syracuse or even enter the NBA G League as he had originally planned.

In an op-ed for The Athletic, Paul stated that the regulation will restrict those from less prestigious backgrounds, people of color, and those without the financial means to attend college from acting as agents in the future, giving NCAA officials more influence.[16] The NCAA then reversed its position on the rule change.

During the NBA All-Star Weekend in 2020, Paul will begin “Klutch Conversations” with SocialWorks and General Mills to promote financial literacy among young people.

Nerlens Noel reportedly sued Rich Paul in August 2021 for violation of fiduciary duty, breach of contract, and negligence for his role in turning down a $70 million contract offer from the Dallas Mavericks during the offseason preceding the 2017-18 season. The two eventually reached an agreement on January 11, 2023, with Noel paying full commissions on a $5 million contract he signed with the New York Knicks in 2020 and Noel later withdrawing all legal precedings.
