Chris Wood Education and Career

Wood attended Dublin Jerome High School, where his drama instructor urged him to pursue a career as an actor and writer. In his senior year, his school theater program performed a play he created about a talking dead body discovered on a corporate rooftop. His mother didn’t like it.

Wood graduated from Elon University in North Carolina with a B.F.A. in music theatre. He was cast as the lead in Spring Awakening’s national tour only weeks before graduation, which took him to Los Angeles for the first time. The show earned Wood his first representation, and shortly after the tour concluded, he was cast in an Amazon Studios comedy pilot. After the pilot was not picked up for series, Wood began working on television in shows including Girls (2012), The Carrie Diaries (2013), Major Crimes (2012), The Vampire Diaries (2009), and the Civil War miniseries Mercy Street (2016).

His first main part in a series was in Containment (2016), a limited event series in which he played an Atlanta officer confined in a quarantine zone due to a hazardous virus epidemic. Wood then joined the comic-book series Supergirl (2015) for a two-season arc, portraying the character ‘Mon-el’. He then returned to his filmmaking origins by writing and directing a short film, and he is currently working on his first feature picture.

Wood’s mother works in finance, while his father works in banking. He has one sister, who is a dancer and instructor. Wood founded the non-profit campaign IDONTMIND in 2017, which aims to remove the stigma associated with mental illness by encouraging people to come out about their thoughts.

In 2020, Wood was cast in the pilot for Thirtysomething(else), a sequel to the ABC program Thirtysomething, in which he would have played Leo Steadman, the son of Hope (Mel Harris) and Michael (Ken Olin). The network did not pick up the series for air, citing budget concerns and a lack of “star power within the new leads”

Wood was announced to play Prince Adam and He-Man in Masters of the Universe: Revelation on February 24, 2020. The first half of the film will be released on July 23, 2021, and the second half on November 23, the same year. On June 2, 2022, it was reported that Wood would play Russell Hammond in Almost Famous, a musical based on the film that would premiere on Broadway in October 2022. Following mediocre reviews and a 74% average seating capacity, the show announced in December that it would close with its final performance on January 8, 2023.

In March 2023, the short film Snowshoe, which Wood wrote, directed, and stars in alongside Grant Gustin from The Flash, was posted on YouTube.

Chris Wood’s Personal Life

When Wood was in his early twenties, his father died from an undiagnosed mental health illness that caused psychotic symptoms. His death was the result of a manic episode that progressed to heart failure. Wood says he was unable to get his father the care he needed quickly enough due to the stigma and lack of awareness surrounding mental health.

Since his father’s death, Wood has become an ardent advocate for mental health awareness, serving on the Board of Directors for Mental Health America. In October 2017, he started a mental health awareness campaign and website “IDONTMIND” that strives to reduce stigma about mental health and give tools and information.

Wood met co-star Melissa Benoist on the set of Supergirl in 2016, shortly after joining the cast for season two, and their relationship was confirmed in 2017. They announced their engagement on Instagram on February 10, 2019. On September 1, 2019, the couple married in Ojai, California. On March 4, 2020, the couple shared on Instagram that they were expecting their first child. They announced the birth of their son in September 2020.
