The fourth Baron Rothschild, Nathaniel Charles Jacob Rothschild, is a British peer, investment banker, and descendant of the Rothschild banking family. He was born on April 29, 1936.
He has held numerous significant positions in business, finance, and British public life. He is currently mostly retired and has been involved in a number of humanitarian and philanthropic endeavors.

He is the eldest child of Victor Rothschild, 3rd Baron Rothschild, by his first wife Barbara Judith Rothschild (née Hutchinson), and was born in Berkshire, England While his mother converted to Orthodox Judaism after their marriage, his father was raised in a Jewish family. Rothschild had his education at Eton College before moving on to Christ Church, Oxford, where he was taught by Hugh Trevor-Roper and earned a First in history. He belonged to the Bullingdon Club at Oxford. He shares a half-sibling with Amschel Rothschild and Emma Georgina Rothschild.
Jacob Rothschild Business career
From 1963 until his resignation in 1980 over a family issue, Rothschild worked at the family bank N M Rothschild & Sons in London. His father, who had opted to pursue a scientific career and had lost control of the majority voting shares, had entrusted the chairmanship of the bank to his distant cousin Sir Evelyn Robert de Rothschild. He gave up his modest ownership in the bank but acquired independent control of the London Stock Exchange-listed Rothschild Investment Trust (now RIT Capital Partners Ltd).
Jacob Rothschild left the bank in 1980, and in 1991, he and Sir Mark Weinberg founded J. Rothschild Assurance Group, which is now St. James’s Place plc. He collaborated with Kerry Packer and Sir James Goldsmith in 1989 to make a failed bid for British American Tobacco.
The largest investment trust listed on the London Stock Exchange with a net asset value of around £2 billion is RIT Capital Partners plc, of which Rothschild is the chairman.[6] He is the chairman of RIT Capital Partners plc’s subsidiary J Rothschild Capital Management. Jacob Rothschild Philanthropy
Jacob Rothschild has been actively involved in British charity for the arts. From 1985 to 1991, he served as the National Gallery’s chairman of trustees. From 1992 to 1998, he served as the National Heritage Memorial Fund’s chairman. He held the significant position of chairman of the cultural Lottery Fund from 1994 to 1998, serving at the Prime Minister’s invitation. In this capacity, he oversaw the disbursement of £1.2 billion in awards to the cultural sector.

He was particularly involved in the restoration of Somerset House in London, where he helped protect the Gilbert Collection and safeguard the Courtauld Institute of Art’s long-term viability. He completed the restoration of Spencer House, one of the best remaining townhouses from the 18th century in London, which is close to his own offices, as a private project.
In 1993, he established the Butrint Foundation alongside John Sainsbury, Baron Sainsbury of Preston Candover, to document and protect the archaeological site of Butrint in Albania, which is adjacent to his Corfiot vacation property. Jacob continues to serve as the Butrint Foundation’s chairman today.
Jacob Rothschild served as the head of Yad Hanadiv, the family organization that donated the Knesset and the Supreme Court buildings to Israel between 1989 and 2018. He has also monitored the Rothschild family’s charity activities in that country. In addition, he serves as chairman of the board of trustees, patron, and president of The Rothschild Foundation (Hanadiv) Europe. He also serves as the Institute for Jewish Policy Research’s Honorary President.

Jacob Rothschild Waddesdon Manor
He began a close relationship with Waddesdon Manor, the house and grounds built by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild in the 1880s and left to the National Trust in 1957 by his cousin James A. de Rothschild, after inheriting the estates from his aunt Dorothy de Rothschild in 1988. In an unusual arrangement, the National Trust has granted him permission to manage Waddesdon Manor as a semi-independent enterprise. He has been a significant benefactor of the restoration of Waddesdon Manor through a private family charitable trust.[30] His personal collection of 15,000 bottles of Rothschild wines, some of which date back to 1870, is kept in the vaults at Waddesdon Manor.
