PSG Part Ways With Ander Herrera Two Years Early, Midfielder Returns to Bilbao

PSG has officially ended Ander Herrera’s contract, with two years remaining, allowing the Spanish midfielder to move on freely.

Despite his consistent contributions since arriving from Manchester United, the 33-year-old had become surplus to requirements under the club’s current plans.

Reports confirm that Herrera is set to rejoin Athletic Bilbao, the La Liga side he once played for between 2011 and 2014 before his £28.85m move to Old Trafford.

The deal sees him sign until 2024, with an option to extend by another year.

Interestingly, while Herrera had initially insisted on seeing out his PSG contract, he eventually agreed to a release after discussions.

PSG needed to trim their squad, and Herrera was left out of the opening Ligue 1 fixtures, making the decision all but inevitable.

Herrera reportedly gave up 40% of his remaining salary so that Bilbao wouldn’t have to pay a transfer fee, and he won’t be the club’s highest earner either.

Back under the same coach who managed him in his final season at Bilbao, Ernesto Valverde, Herrera is expected to slot straight back into the squad.
