How I Met Shakira in 2010 | Gerard Piqué Opens Up on the Spark That Started It All
In a heartfelt reflection, former Barcelona star Gerard Piqué walks us through the unexpected beginnings of one of football’s most iconic love stories, his relationship with global pop sensation Shakira.
The pair, who would go on to become one of the world’s most talked-about celebrity couples, first crossed paths in 2010 during the filming of the music video for Waka Waka (This Time for Africa), the official anthem of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
“The first time I met Shakira was in Madrid,” Piqué said, “when we were filming the video for Waka Waka. I asked for her number.”
Shakira was already slated to perform at the World Cup’s opening ceremony in South Africa, days before the Spanish national team was set to arrive.
Piqué didn’t hesitate to reach out.
“I texted her something stupid, asking about the weather,” he laughed. “Most people would just say ‘It’s cold, bring a jacket.’ But she replied with a long, detailed message describing the temperature changes throughout the day.”
That response left an impression not just for its content, but for the warmth and attentiveness behind it.
“I thought, ‘Jesus, this isn’t normal.’ That’s when I realised there was something special here.”
From that point on, they continued to message throughout the tournament.
But there was one problem: Piqué had no clear path to see her again unless he reached the World Cup final, where Shakira would perform at the closing ceremony.
“So I told her, ‘If the only way I can see you again is in the final, then I’ll make sure we get there.’”
And that’s exactly what happened.
Piqué and Spain lifted the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and the closing ceremony became more than just a victory celebration; it was the start of a love story that would span over a decade.
“I left South Africa as a different man. I had just won the World Cup, and I met the love of my life.”

Why This Story Still Resonates
It’s not just about a footballer meeting a pop star; it’s about timing, ambition, and the magic of unexpected connections.
Piqué’s story highlights how genuine affection can often begin with something as simple as asking about the weather.
