Pep Guardiola Reacts Ahead of Titanic Clash With Liverpool at Anfield on the 16th

As the Premier League gears up for another heavyweight showdown, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has shared his thoughts ahead of a critical encounter with Liverpool on Sunday, the 16th.

With the match billed as a potential title-decider and a test of mental steel, Guardiola was clear: City won’t be fazed by the legendary Anfield roar.

Klopp’s Confidence vs. Pep’s Poise

Earlier in the week, Jurgen Klopp expressed confidence in Liverpool’s ability to rise to the occasion.

The Reds’ boss hinted at a tactical edge over Guardiola’s system, pointing to previous wins and the psychological energy of a packed Anfield.

But Guardiola was unmoved by the talk.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, the city boss dismissed the narrative that his team struggles at Anfield solely due to crowd pressure.

“Of course, the crowd is involved,” Pep said, “but it’s because they have a good team. That’s the real reason. Anfield is one of the biggest and nicest atmospheres in football, but it’s still just a football game.”

City’s Mixed History at Anfield

  • Manchester City hasn’t lost to Liverpool in the Premier League since 2019.

  • They won 4-1 at Anfield in 2021, their first league win there since 2003, although the match was played behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Guardiola’s side did, however, lose twice to Liverpool in 2022, in the FA Cup semi-final and the Community Shield.

The debate over whether City crumbles under the Anfield pressure was fueled by their 2018 losses and by Liverpool’s incredible home record.

The Reds haven’t lost a home league game with fans in attendance since April 2017.

Yet, Guardiola believes the real threat lies not in the noise but in Liverpool’s talent.

“You have to be at the top level especially off the ball, with second balls, and so many other things,” he explained. “Winning or losing, we always play with incredible personality at Anfield.”

What’s at Stake?

City are locked in a tight title race with Arsenal. A slip-up at Anfield could widen the gap, while a win might just tip the momentum their way.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are trying to claw back into form after a shaky start to the season.

  • Liverpool currently trails City by 13 points, though they have a game in hand.

  • They’ve won just 2 of their opening 8 league matches, raising questions about their consistency.

Despite that, Guardiola insists there’s no underestimating the opposition.

“I don’t look at good or bad moments. I always expect the best version of any team and with Liverpool, that’s a very high level.”
