Sofyan Amrabat Biography

On loan from Serie A club Fiorentina, Sofyan Amrabat (Arabic: ; Berber languages: ; born 21 August 1996) is a professional footballer who plays defensive midfield for Premier League club Manchester United. He represents the national team of Morocco and was born in the Netherlands.

Amrabat is an Utrecht youth system alum. Before being acquired by Feyenoord in 2017, he made his first-team debut for the organization in November 2014. He went on to make a total of 54 appearances for them. He joined the Belgian team Club Brugge a year later, and in August 2019 they loaned him to the Italian team Hellas Verona. In January 2020, Hellas Verona bought him and quickly sold him to Fiorentina. At the conclusion of the 2023 summer transfer window, he was acquired on loan by Manchester United.

Amrabat competed in youth international matches for both Morocco and the Netherlands. He represents Morocco at two FIFA World Cups and made his senior international debut in March 2017.

Early Life & Education

A football prodigy named Sofyan Amrabat was born on August 21, 1996, in the Netherlands’ charming town of Huizen. His mother’s name is regrettably unknown, and he was born to Moroccan parents. His father’s name is Mohammed Amrabat.

Career

He transferred to Feyenoord in 2017, and Utrecht received a €4 million transfer fee as part of his four-year contract. 2018 saw the transfer of Sofyan Amrabat to Club Brugge and a €2.5 million transfer fee to Feyenoord. In 2019, he was loaned to Hellas Verona.

Sofyan Amrabat was transferred to Fiorentina for €20 million with the possibility of a further €1.5 million in add-ons after Hellas Verona exercised their option to purchase him from Club Brugge for €3.5 million in January 2020.

Sofyan Amrabat played on loan with Hellas Verona up until the end of the 2019–2020 campaign despite the move to Fiorentina. He won the Player of the Season title from Hellas Verona in July 2020 as a result of his efforts.

Sofyan Amrabat made his Fiorentina debut on September 26, 2020, in a 4-3 victory over Inter Milan. He kept up his impressive play by participating for the entire dramatic 2-1 defeat of Fiorentina by West Ham United in the 2023 UEFA Europa League final.

On March 28, 2017, he made his senior debut for the Moroccan national team in a 1-0 friendly victory against Tunisia. Then, Sofyan Amrabat was a member of Morocco’s 23-man World Cup roster.

Club career

Utrecht

Amrabat transferred from HSV De Zuidvogels to Utrecht’s youth system in 2007. On November 2, 2014, he made his Utrecht debut against Vitesse.

Feyenoord

Amrabat joined Feyenoord during the 2017 summer. In exchange for a €4 million transfer fee, he signed a four-year contract with Utrecht.

Club Brugge

He signed a four-year contract with Belgian team Club Brugge in August 2018, with Feyenoord receiving €2.5 million. In August 2019, he was loaned to the Italian team Hellas Verona.

Hellas Verona

Hellas Verona used their option to pay €3.5 million to sign Amrabat from Club Brugge in January 2020. They transferred him to Fiorentina right away for a transfer fee of €20 million and a possible add-on of €1.5 million. Amrabat continued to play on loan for Hellas Verona until the end of the 2019–20 campaign because he was only allowed to represent two clubs at a time. He received the Hellas Verona Player of the Season award in July 2020.

Fiorentina

On September 26, 2020, Amrabat made his Fiorentina debut in a 4-3 loss to Inter Milan. In the 2023 UEFA Europa Conference League final between Fiorentina and West Ham United, he started and participated in every minute. Fiorentina lost 2-1.

Manchester United

On deadline day in the summer of 2023, Amrabat transferred from Fiorentina to Manchester United for a loan period ending in June 2024. Morocco international will join Manchester United on a season-long loan for £8.5 million with the option to purchase for $21.4 million.

International career

Netherlands under-15 team

Amrabat was qualified to compete internationally for either Morocco or the Netherlands. He initially played for the Netherlands, collecting four appearances at the under-15 level.

Morocco

Amrabat was chosen for the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup Moroccan under-17 national squad. He participated in the competition three times.

In a 1-0 friendly victory over Tunisia on March 28, 2017, Amrabat made his senior debut for the Moroccan national team. He was included in Morocco’s 23-man roster for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia in May of that year.
