Lara Stone Modeling career
Stone joined IMG Models globally in 2006 after quitting Elite. During Paris Fashion Week in January, she made her catwalk debut in Riccardo Tisci’s Givenchy couture shows. She also signed an exclusive contract with Calvin Klein later that year. In March 2007, Stone was the subject of a Vogue Paris spread and graced the cover in April. Stone was dubbed the “anti-model” by Cathy Horyn of the New York Times. On New York Magazine’s list of the “Top Ten Models to Watch” for New York Fashion Week, she was named No. 2. In addition to closing for Chanel, Diesel, Marc Jacobs, Stella McCartney, and Balmain, Stone has opened shows for Giles Deacon, Isabel Marant, Christopher Kane, Fendi, and MaxMara. In 2008, she also inked a “semi-exclusive” contract with Prada.
She worked on campaigns for Givenchy, Belstaff, Just Cavalli, and H&M in the spring/summer of 2008. She worked on campaigns for Calvin Klein, Givenchy, Belstaff, Hugo Boss, Calvin Klein Cosmetics, and Jil Sander for the fall/winter 2008 season. Stone was one of the fourteen models selected to appear on one of the covers of the September 2008 issue of V magazine.
Stone stated that the runway does not appeal to her and that her extremely small feet for someone of her size prevent her from wearing shoes in the February 2009 issue of Vogue Paris, which featured Stone on the cover. Stone was the “Fashion’s It Girl” and discussed why she is the industry’s most sought-after face and body on the August 2009 cover of W. She was ranked among the best 30 models of the 2000s by Vogue Paris.
Stone made her American Vogue debut on the May 2009 cover as one of the magazine’s “Faces of the Moment,” along with Liya Kebede, Anna Jagodzinska, Natalia Vodianova, Caroline Trentini, Jourdan Dunn, Raquel Zimmermann, Sasha Pivovarova, Natasha Poly, Karen Elson, and Isabeli Fontana. Additionally, the cover, which highlighted models rather than celebrities, made it a special issue. When she appeared in an editorial for French Vogue’s October 2009 issue with her face and body darkened, there was an international racial uproar.
2010 saw Stone replace Sasha Pivovarova as the new face of Prada’s Infusion d’Iris fragrance, which was photographed by Steven Meisel. She also participated in advertisements for Louis Vuitton, Versus by Versace Fragrance, Jaeger, and H&M during the spring and summer. Models with wide lips, gap teeth, and blonde hair began to appear in the same year as her style, including Georgia May Jagger, Lindsey Wixson, and Ashley Smith. On cycle 15 of America’s Next Top Model, Tyra Banks was so enthused by the appearance that she had a contestant’s teeth gap increased.
The 26-year-old model became the face of the Calvin Klein Collection, CK Calvin Klein, and Calvin Klein Jeans for the fall of 2010 after signing an exclusive contract with Calvin Klein Inc. For the first time in a long time, the design house used the same model to represent all three of its brands, and Stone would feature exclusively in CKI’s fall apparel advertisements and runway shows. She received the British Fashion Awards Model of the Year 2010 at the year’s end.
Stone was pictured by Karl Lagerfeld for the 2011 Pirelli Calendar. Stone appeared on one of the three May 2011 covers for Vogue UK, marking the first multi-cover in the magazine’s 95-year history. The occasion was the wedding of Prince William of Wales and Kate Middleton. She debuted at No. 7 on Forbes’ list of the top-earning models in the world, having earned an estimated $4.5 million since May of the previous year (2010–2011).
Stone served as the face of Calvin Klein’s 2012 underwear campaign and was once more depicted in the Mario Sorrenti-shot 2012 Pirelli calendar.
Before transitioning to their “Industry Icons” list, Stone was ranked as the top model on models.com’s “Top 50 Models” list from Spring 2010 to Summer 2012. She was also listed as the ninth sexiest model on their Top Sexiest Models list.
Stone once more graced the covers of Vogue Paris in March 2014 and American Harper’s Bazaar in April 2014.
