Senamile Masango Biography

Ms Senamile Masango is a renowned nuclear physicist, global energy leader, entrepreneur, and the first African woman to lead an African-led team performing tests at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). CERN is a world-renowned scientific research facility where the Higgs boson was found. Ms Masango worked as a Junior Project Engineer and is currently pursuing a PhD in Nuclear Physics at the University of the Western Cape, where she also serves on the council.

She is the creator of the Senamile Masango Foundation. She is passionate about science and engineering and works to empower women in Africa. The Foundation provides programs for middle school children and professionals, such as a conference for middle and high school students, academic and career preparation programs for college students, mentoring, internships, scholarships, a living-learning residential community, and much more.

Ms Masango leads a research team representing South Africa at the BRICS Youth Energy Agency. This is a youth international volunteer organization founded to promote energy cooperation among BRICS countries as well as the development of their research and scientific capabilities. Under her direction, the Senamile Masango Foundation won South Africa’s BRICS Youth Energy Outlook 2020. She was part of the International Women’s Conference organized by South Africa’s Parliament, where she discussed difficulties that African women confront in science.

Her previous leadership positions include Deputy Secretary of Peace Aid International, Chairperson of Young African Women in Leadership, Chairperson of United African Youth, and member of the Progressive Professionals Forum’s National Executive Committee.

Her accomplishments include being named one of South Africa’s most successful black female scientists under the age of 35 in 2019 by the Mail and Guardian’s list of the top 200 young South African scientists and technologists. She was named one of the 50 Most Inspiring Women of 2020 and a finalist for the Women in Tech Global Awards in 2021. Ms Masango is the recipient of the 2022 International Women in Science Award, which recognizes her significant contributions to scientific advancement.

Masango was born and raised in KwaNongoma, KwaZulu-Natal, in May 1987. Life threw her a curveball when she became a teen mother. Masango, a Zulu royal princess, recovered and is now a nuclear physicist committed to using science and engineering to empower African women. She established the Senamile Masango Foundation in 2014, which trains young women scientists and engineers across the continent. She is a PhD candidate in nuclear physics and the first African woman to participate in the European Organisation for Nuclear Research in Switzerland.

Masango is also the chairwoman of Women in Science and Engineering in Africa (Wise Africa), a youth leadership program that prepares students for careers in science and technology. She has received numerous awards, including being named one of the 50 Global Inspirational Women of 2020. “The day you plant the seed isn’t the day you eat the fruit; don’t give up, keep watering that seed,” Masango goes on to add.
