Backxwash Biography

Rapper and producer Ashanti Mutinta, also professionally known as Backxwash, is a Zambian-Canadian who resides in Montreal, Quebec. Her 2020 album God Has Nothing to Do with This Leave Him Out of It, which was awarded the 2020 Polaris Music Prize, is what made her most famous.

After relocating to British Columbia, Canada at the age of seventeen to pursue a computer science degree, Mutinta, who was born and raised in Lusaka, Zambia, started rapping and making music in FL Studio.

She relocated to Montreal after earning her degree, where she started playing at jam sessions and released her first extended play (EP), F.R.E.A.K.S., in 2018. Later that year, she released the EP Black Sailor Moon as a follow-up. She revealed her gender identity at about the same time.

Her second full-length album, God Has Nothing to Do with This Leave Him Out of It, was released in May 2020. Her sound combines elements of post-rock, heavy metal, and hip hop, with Black Sabbath samples and Godspeed You! Black Emperor-inspired instrumental interludes. But because of multiple uncleared samples, the album was removed from streaming platforms and online music retailers. As a result, it can now only be downloaded for free from Backxwash’s Bandcamp page.

On June 20, 2021, she would subsequently release her third full-length album to largely positive reviews, titled I Lie Here Buried with My Rings and My Dresses. A longlist for the 2022 Polaris Music Prize included the song I Lie Here Buried with My Rings and My Dresses.

The songs “Don’t Come to the Woods” and “Devil in a Moshpit” by Backxwash were featured in Work in Progress, a Showtime series, in Season 1, Episode 2.
