President Muhammadu Buhari Agrees to Consider Release of Nnamdi Kanu
President Muhammadu Buhari has agreed to give serious thought to a formal request for the release of the detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
Following a high-profile meeting with respected leaders from the Southeast region.
The meeting, held at the State House in Abuja on Friday, November 19, 2022, was led by Mbazulike Amaechi, a former aviation minister and one of the last surviving members of Nigeria’s First Republic.

The Request and Buhari’s Response
During the meeting, President Buhari acknowledged the complexity and sensitivity surrounding the request.
In his words:
“You have made an extremely difficult demand on me as a leader of this country.”
According to his media adviser, Femi Adesina, the president further explained:
“The implication of your request is very serious. In the last six years since I became President, nobody would say I have interfered in the work of the Judiciary.”
The President emphasized the independence of the judiciary, suggesting that while he would consider the request, the legal processes already in motion must be respected.

Who Was at the Meeting?
The delegation included several notable figures:
Chukwuemeka Ezeife: Former Governor of Anambra State
Bishop Sunday Onuoha: Methodist Church Leader
Goddy Uwazurike: Former President, Aka Ikenga
Mr. Tagbo Amaechi: Respected Community Leader
They all voiced strong concern over the ongoing unrest in the Southeast, especially how it has affected education, business operations, and day-to-day peace.
Mbazulike Amaechi’s Emotional Plea
Speaking on behalf of the group, Amaechi described the situation as
“Pathetic and painful. The socio-economic structure of the South East is crumbling. Businesses are suffering, schools are closing, and people live in fear.”
He urged the president to adopt a political rather than military solution to end the crisis.
