Ahead of Stardom With… Peterson Okopi

Would you kindly describe your educational background?

My primary and secondary schooling took place in Lagos.

We lived and went to school in barracks while my dad was serving in the military.

I attended the National Open University, where I am now studying mass communication, and the Yaba College of Technology.

How did you get started in the music business?

My experience with gospel music has been exciting.

When I was a child, the Air Force Base had a church where we could worship because the barracks are like a small area with a school, a hospital, and a church, so we didn’t always need to leave.

I was raised in a musical family.

Excellent music was very important to my parents.

However, I see music as a calling and a gift from God.

It began when I attended church on Sundays.

Later, when I joined the junior choir, I observed that the major choir would regularly pick me up from Sunday school so I could perform a solo in a song in the main church. This pattern persisted.

Seeing God’s stamp on my life, my mother took the time to cultivate the gift of God within me.

She has always given me permission to serve in various capacities.

She gave me over to our choirmaster, Mr. David Haruna, when I turned adolescence so he could nurture the gift via practices and prayers.

I found a purpose in music ministry and the sound unusual to me as I became closer to God.

What difficulties did you encounter?

There’s a tale to match every glory.

There were moments when I relied only on God since, in the absence of a recognizable sign, like becoming a celebrity, many people will never accept that God is calling someone into their life.

Since I was alone, I was doing music in a selfless manner.

I went through difficult moments when people’s patience and trust were put to the test and when people lied to me.

I can recall a moment when I had to ask God to provide me with a way out, and He was able to accomplish it in His own way.

Which song first made you famous?

Osuba is the song. With Osuba, I just realized that I had been humming the song nonstop during the lockdown, even though I had never heard of it before.

I deal with music according to my season, and that was the song that would always come at that particular time when I was trusting God for more relationship with Him.

Before I knew it, I was sharing the music everywhere I went and people were curious about what it was about.

Which project are you working on right now?

Not a Scam is a new song I just published. This is to inform everyone on the planet that the Jesus we speak of is real and capable of guiding them through life’s journey.

What words of wisdom would you provide to other aspiring musicians?

I tell them to focus on Jesus, and the other things will become less important. Christ is the real prize, and God will grant us whatever we ask for.’
