Harmilan is a Punjabi native from Hoshiarpur. She attended the Saint Soldier School in Hoshiarpur and the Doaba Public School in Mahilpur for her education. Both of Harmilan’s parents play sports. Her mother, Madhuri Singh, earned silver in the 800 meters at the 2002 Asian Games, while her father, Amandeep Bains, took home a medal in the 1500 meters at the South Asian Games. In 2003, her mother was also recognized with an Arjuna Award. She received her training at the Dharamashala Sports Authority of India training facility. Competing in the 800m and 1500m categories, Harmilan Kaur Bains is a second-generation Middle Distance Athlete (Sprinter).

She didn’t qualify for the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Oregon, the United States, after setting a record speed during the 60th National Open Athletics Championship on September 16, 2021, at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Hanamkonda (Warangal).

She recognized she could break the national record in the final 20 to 30 meters of the 1500-meter race, which is what she did. She smashed the 1500-meter national record two days later, and she also won the 800-meter race.

Her mother earned an 800-meter silver medal at the 2002 Asian Games and was given the Arjuna Award by the Indian government. Her father is a former 1500-meter runner who has won numerous international medals in this sport.

Her mother had always wanted her to play lawn tennis instead of athletics as the latter demands a lot of dedication and hard work. Conversely, lawn tennis is a sport with a luxurious side. However, their village did not offer any lawn tennis coaching. Harmilan’s mother was advised by her father to enroll her in athletics.

She used to hear more sports stories and less fairytales when she was younger. She stopped being interested in sports as a result. Her father wished for her to participate in sports. He would ask her to run, leaving her on the ground. Her father would leave in a minute, and she would stop running.

She used to watch boys playing dodgeball during practice, and one day she informed her mother that she wanted to play too. Her mother then agrees, but only if she completes a full round of the earth before she can play that game. She concurred. She became more and more interested in dodgeball. Her father had organized football in their village back then. He mentioned athletics in addition to football.

Once, Harmilan participated in that sports competition and finished second. She chose to give up athletics since she was so irritated with her second position. However, her mother quickly persuaded her to keep up her athletic endeavors. She won the competition the next time she participated. Her interest in games increased after that, and she quickly began becoming proficient in this activity. Recalling that experience, she said,
