The way Kannywood welcomed my return

Hadiza Muhammed Sani, often known as Hadiza Kabara, is one of Kannywood’s pioneering actors. In this interview, she discusses her decade-long absence from the profession, her involvement in ‘Gidan Badamasi’, and other topics. Excerpts:

Labaranyau: What was the beginning of your acting career?

Hadiza Kabara: It was, I believe, in 1998. Although stage drama was still popular at the time, I was fortunate to start working in movies right away.

I also believe that it was meant to be. I enjoy viewing Hausa films, particularly those produced by Sarauniya Productions. We would return after school and watch Hausa movies all day since I was in secondary school at the time.

I became interested in the movies because of what I was watching. I believe the late Auwal Sabo and Sarauniya Movies Production were big influences on my (growing) passion for acting since I recall “Allura da Zare” as my favorite film at the time.

I somehow got into the habit of visiting movie sets to witness live filming. However, I was only there to observe them do nothing; later, when Allah willed, I began to act.

My first film was never released for reasons that are only known to the creators, so even now I can’t recall the title. On the other hand, “Nagari” was the film that gave me fame.

Labaranyau: Kannywood is well-known for not embracing those who have returned to the industry after a long absence. Your situation is unique, having been absent for more than a decade. Why do you believe this is so?

Hadiza Kabara: It’s not a secret. Yes, the Hausa film business has operated in that manner, but things can yet be changed. Yes, I left the field after getting married, but when I came back, people still thought highly of me. Not only did the industry accept my return, but it also provided me with a larger platform than I had previously.

Falalu Dorayi, the director of the television show “Gidan Badamasi,” has been incredibly understanding and supportive in helping numerous artists get back into the system.

Numerous movie deals have come my way since I returned. I will always be appreciative to Kannywood for considering me deserving once more.

I married a fellow industry person in Kannywood back then, and we split a few years later. From that marriage, I have a daughter.

I got married again not too long after my first marriage ended in divorce. After a few years together, my marriage to that person also ended in divorce. Out of it, I have another daughter.

Therefore, after nearly a decade away from acting, I chose to come back, and to God be the glory, here I am now more visible than when I left.

Labaranyau: In “Gidan Badamasi,” you portrayed a haughty woman. How did the encounter go?

Hadiza Kabara: Compared to Hauwa, I am completely different. Some people may have assumed I was so cruel and irascible because of the part, but it’s all play. Hadiza is a laid-back individual with a big heart.

Labaranyau: Was it challenging for you to reintegrate into the industry?

Hadiza Kabara: Not at all. An actress is an actress forever. Without question, there have been significant changes in the production of films over the years. However since I was able to fit in with the new style with ease, this did not present a problem for me.

I must admit that I was warmly welcomed by my colleagues, who have also been incredibly supportive. We just carried on from where we had left off.

Labaranyau: Now that you’re back, what are you working on?

Hadiza Kabara: I intend to keep doing what I do best, which is acting. I used to produce films, and I intend to keep doing so to positively influence people’s lives.

Labaranyau: Compared to when you were here, Kannywood has seen significant alteration. How do you fit in and do you think you’ll be relevant in the future?

Hadiza Kabara: Films are just films. While it is true that there are differences, as an actor you should be able to fit in with any part or situation you find yourself in with ease.

In the meantime, I was warmly welcomed by my coworkers, particularly Falalu Dorayi, the director of Gidan Badamasi, and other performers. They’ve been understanding. I was so able to fit in without any problems thanks to their assistance. Since my comeback, I’ve been in a lot of big-budget films, and producers are coming for me.

Regarding staying relevant, I believe that if you’re good at what you do, producers will find you. That’s demonstrated by the films I’ve worked on since coming back.

Labaranyau: Given the state of the industry, which is currently declining, how do you plan to accomplish that?

Hadiza Kabara: To get back on its feet, it desperately needs intervention as well as reorientation; it isn’t shrinking per se. Negative market trends have caused a decline in the production of films.

I am aware, nevertheless, that people working in the sector are making every effort to prevent it from collapsing completely. I think it will soon recover its splendor and things will go back to normal.

Labaranyau: After being out of two marriages, would you think about getting married again?

Hadiza Kabara: Is it not? When the time comes, I will undoubtedly remarry, and I hope to find a decent spouse who would look out for me and grant me all the rights a wife needs from her husband. When I get married, I’ll have to stop being myself as usual.

Labaranyau: How did your time in Kannywood start all those years ago?

Hadiza Kabara: The only reason I was involved in the movie was God’s will. I remember clearly that, in my youth and naivety, I had to practice scenes multiple times before I got them just right. I felt as though I was surrounded by millions of people on my first day. Despite my fear and nervousness, I was able to follow instructions thanks to the directors’ help.

My first film’s production problems prevented it from ever being released. If my memory serves me well, the title

of my second film was “Hukunci.” I went on to work on “Dabi’a” and “Nagari,” the movies that put me in the spotlight. Before I got married, I had approximately 70 appearances in Hausa films.

Labaranyau: Do you believe that producers are now flocking to YouTube due to the lack of market in Kannywood, which has badly impacted the industry?

Hadiza Kabara: Not in my opinion. It’s a new development, and you have to adapt to the changes in the world or risk falling behind.

Who will buy your movies on CD if you continue making them? Additionally, people are too busy these days to watch movies on CDs. Nowadays, some people watch movies on their phones while working. It’s more straightforward. A few years ago, it was a CD; today, it’s YouTube, and we have no idea what the future holds.

Labaranyau: As a young actress, you were among the greatest; after getting married, you took off. You returned after a protracted absence; are you now satisfied?

Hadiza Kabara: I have only praise for God’s boundless kindness. I’m happy for Kannywood. I can claim that Kannywood has blessed me along with many others. I am unable to even list the blessings. It’s Hausa movies that have shaped who I am today. I have a large social circle and access to a wealth of unimaginable stuff. I give God thanks.

Labaranyau: Now that you are back, are there any regrets from the first time around?

Hadiza Kabara: I don’t regret anything. That I returned makes me joyful. Additionally, you can only resume your previous activity if you found it enjoyable. Thus, no regrets.

Labaranyau: What date do you intend to retire?

Hadiza Kabara: When the time comes for me to remarry, I will tie the knot and make my home with my spouse. I’m not sure when it will happen, but I have faith that it will.

Labaranyau: What difficulties exist?

Hadiza Kabara: There are obstacles in anything you do. All you have to do is be prepared to confront and overcome them. There are a few personal struggles, but I can’t think of just one to share.

Labaranyau: Advice for aspiring performers and fans?

Hadiza Kabara: Our supporters should constantly send us well wishes and prayers. Since we are only human, we are fallible. To my colleagues, let me say that we ought to respect both our industry and ourselves.
