Dr Tanimu Yakubu Biography
Tanimu Yakubu was born in Kurfi, Katsina State, on Sunday, April 30, 1961. He was appointed as a non-executive director of Oando PLC on June 30, 2015.
Before his appointment, he held senior roles in both the commercial and public sectors of Nigeria.
One of his most prominent posts was as Chief Economic Adviser to the President, Commander in Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Umaru Yar’adua, where he also served as Deputy Chief of Staff and a member of the National Economic Management Team from 2007 to 2010.
Tanimu Yakubu, as President Yar’adua’s Chief Economic Adviser, crafted the policies and recommendations that persuaded the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) to establish Nigeria’s first Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF), the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), and was one of six key FGN officials who worked behind the scenes to end the Niger Delta crisis, which resulted in a dramatic increase in the country’s crude output by 900,000bpd.
Another important prior public service engagement was his tenure as Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Finance, Budget, and Economic Planning, Katsina State, from 1999 to 2002.
Under Tanimu Yakubu, Katsina State passed legislation that resulted in the state having the greatest capital-to-recurrent expenditure ratio of at least 70% among all states in the Federal Republic.
Tanimu Yakubu was also the Federal Mortgage Bank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer from 2003 to 2007. While CEO, he oversaw the first mortgage-backed securitization in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Tanimu Yakubu has worked in a variety of private-sector institutions, including Icon Limited (Merchant Bankers), where he worked in both the Investment Bank’s Research and Development Department and its Capital Issues and Investment Division, which covered Financial Advisory, and Afri-Projects Consortium (APC), where he was the Chief Economist and Principal Investment Adviser.
Tanimu Yakubu was the 41-year-old founding president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Economics (1984) and MBA in Finance (1986) from Wagner College in Staten Island, New York, USA, after being expelled from Bayero University in Kano, Nigeria, where he was enrolled as an undergraduate accounting student.
On June 3, 2019, Tanimu Yakubu completed the Corporate Governance Rating System’s Fiduciary Awareness Certification Test (FACT).
He has served on and headed practically all statutory board committees, as well as numerous non-statutory groups.
In just over a year, Tanimu has served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of New Nigeria Development Company Limited, a regional commercial conglomerate controlled by Northern Nigeria’s 19 state governments.
He serves as Northern Nigeria’s Chief Adviser.
Meet Tanimu Yakubu, the new DG of Budget Office
President Bola Tinubu has nominated Mr. Tanimu Yakubu Kurfi as Director-General of the Federation’s Budget Office, succeeding Mr. Ben Akabueze, whose term expired.
Tanimu Yakubu served as President Umaru Yar’Adua’s Chief Economic Adviser from 2007 to 2010, the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria’s Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer from 2003 to 2007, and Katsina State’s Commissioner of Finance, Budget, and Economic Planning from 1999 to 2003.
He graduated from Wagner College in Staten Island, New York, with a Master of Business Administration in Finance and a Bachelor of Science in Economics.
Yakubu previously served as the Chairman of the Katsina State Development Management Board (KTDMB).
Yakubu, who served in the Tinubu-Shettima campaign, was born on April 30, 1961.
