COVID-19 Booster Shots Begin in Nigeria as Omicron Variant Spreads
The Nigerian government has approved COVID-19 booster shots for eligible citizens in response to global concerns over the fast-spreading Omicron variant.
According to a statement by Mohammad Ohitoto of the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA), the booster rollout targets individuals 18 years and above who have already completed their full vaccination doses.
For AstraZeneca, Moderna, or Pfizer: eligible after 6 months
For Johnson & Johnson: eligible after 2 months
The agency’s executive director, Dr. Faisal Shuaib, urged Nigerians to seize the opportunity, saying the booster shot offers stronger protection against the evolving virus.
The nationwide booster rollout begins December 10, and all eligible citizens are advised to visit the nearest health facility to get their shot.
This move comes after Nigeria confirmed a case of the Omicron variant and amid rising global tension surrounding its rapid transmission.
Several countries, including Canada, have already imposed travel restrictions on South Africa, where the variant was first detected.
South Africa responded sharply, with foreign ministry spokesperson Clayson Monyela calling the bans “regrettable and sad,” especially coming from fellow African nations like Nigeria.
