How did you come to be known as Yamu Baba?

I am Ibrahim Yamu Baba in real life. My parents are from Borno State’s Biu. I was born and raised in Jos, where my father was stationed as a civil servant. I entered Kannywood there in Jos.

About how I obtained the name Yamu: because of my fair skin, a man named Lawal in the Jos neighborhood dubbed me Gangare. The name evolved into Yamu Baba as I grew up.

What was the beginning of your Kannywood career?

I believe my total time in the business is twenty years. I’ve been in several music videos and acted in several films.

Why, following the Sambisa music video, did people learn about it after all these years?

I appeared in a lot more popular music videos, such as “Kauna,” “Suwaiti,” and numerous more well-known terms.

You are aware that everything you accomplish has a designated moment when it should be highlighted. Therefore, I believe that the Sambisa music video is mine.

After the first episode of the show, I gained a lot of popularity. It appeared to be a miracle. I give God thanks.

Do you prefer performing in music videos to acting in motion pictures? You appeared in the hit song “Jarumai” after Sambisa.

Another music video we were in was called Jarumai. The song is composed and recorded by Nakabala and Adamu, just like Sambisa, which was written and recorded by Sani Liyaliya.

They invited us simply because they knew we could deliver on their expectations and included us in the video.

Along with these well-known songs, we also produced music videos for “Mai corona,” “Matar soja,” “Mai ciki,” and numerous others.

Can you tell us which films you acted in before you started doing music?

I’ve been in a lot of films. A few of my favorite films are “Rabin Raina,” “Bakin Mulki,” “Ana Musulim,” “Gaushi,” “Sarkakiya,” and far too many more to list.

What is your favorite music video that you have appeared in?

I’m not sure I can choose just one. They’re all good to me. Maybe my admirers will select me. Giving my audience what they want and what they will enjoy, along with constant entertainment, is my goal.

Are you the only one who sings in other people’s songs, or do you sing yourself?

I play music as well. I write and perform music for political events, marriages weddings, and other events.

I compose a variety of music, albeit I haven’t done any movie tunes before. However, I enjoy comedic music more. Long before people started seeing me act, they were more familiar with me as a musician.

To God be the glory, I can sing any kind of music, and I listen to all genres.

However, to contribute to raising knowledge of politics and governance, I’m focusing more on comedic subjects related to politics.

Because I am an actor, I also appear in other people’s songs. I may thus appear in any music video at request because I am an actor.

Which do you feel more at ease with, music or movies?

I feel at ease doing both. But I can tell that these days, I make more money from music and music videos. I’m not denying that movies help me make money, but if I did, I would be lying.

The film served as the foundation, and it made me famous and wealthy. However, with the premiere of the “Sambisa” video, music has been bringing in more money for me.

We quickly reached over a million views, and ever since, every video we uploaded has received a lot of attention and encouraging remarks.

By whom do you look up to?

Because I learned music by trial and error, I will be honest and say that I have no musical role models. Observing musicians in the studio for a considerable amount of time led me to begin learning.

As my interest grew, I began to practice and eventually picked up the skill.

My role model in movies, though, is Ali Nuhu. His contributions to the industry are admirable, and I like him.

Could you describe your current success story in the industry since you entered it?

I give thanks to God for all of my current accomplishments. Numerous organizations, notably Itel, have recognized and honored me with honors.

And I now own a lot of material possessions as a result of this industry. Given how I entered the field and my current accomplishments, I can only give God praise.

I seldom ever stroll around any state in northern Nigeria without being acknowledged. That in and of itself is a noteworthy accomplishment for which one ought to feel content.

For you, what’s next?

Being more well-known and well-liked is my next goal. My goal of establishing a foundation that will serve the underprivileged and vulnerable is the reason I aspire to be more well-known.

Anytime I see someone happy, it makes me happy too. In light of this, my next big life objective is to use the money I make to produce movies to help other people.

Describe the Sambisa music video that helped you become well-known.

The video depicts me proposing marriage to Zainab Sambisa. She finally consented to marry me after much provocation, but only if the ceremony was held in Sambisa Forest, where she claimed to be from.

I began to justify myself to her when she told me, saying things like “I beat women” and “I have three wives,” but she insisted that we were getting married. There was a musical comedy.

Even though I’ve been acting and singing for a while, my popularity increased after seeing the “Sambisa” video. Angon Sambisa is the name that people call me more today than Yamu.

Yamu Baba: “Sambisa,” my first music video, brought me fame

The humorous musical video “Sambisa” grabbed viewers’ attention when its star abandoned the girl he loves when she insisted they get married in the dangerous Sambisa forest, which is well-known for being a terrorist retreat.

Ibrahim Yamu Baba, sometimes called Angon Sambisa (the Sambisa groom) or Yamu Baba, said that he was not as well known as he was because of his love ballad “Sambisa.”

In 2019, Baba and Zainab Usman Aliyu appeared in the blockbuster music video for “Sambisa.”

In one, Baba is shown extending an invitation to a woman, to which she says yes, only to bolt when she requests that the wedding happen in the Sambisa forest, where it is known that Boko Haram terrorists maintain temporary camps.

Sambisa parts two and three were later produced as a result of the pair building on the popularity of the first episode.

In an interview with Daily Trust, Baba stated that in addition to singing in Kannywood, he has a long history as an actor.

He was born and raised in Jos, but his birthplace is Biu, in Borno State.

“This ‘Sambisa’ video is what made me more popular, even though I have been acting and singing for a long time.”

He said, “As a result, people are now referring to me as Angon Sambisa or the Sambisa groom.”

“I don’t have any specific role model in music,” Baba replied when asked about his role models.

“I can sing in every genre, thank God, and I listen to them all.

However, my focus these days is primarily on political subjects through humor.

“As far as filmmaking goes, I look up to Ali Nuhu.”

“I have been in the Kannywood industry for approximately fifteen years. During that time, I acted in numerous films, including Rawan Raina, Bakin Mulki, and Ana Muslim.

I also have several upcoming films, including Gaushi and Sarkakiya.”

Though Baba acknowledged that he was only a featured actor in the video, he did not perform the song “Sambisa.”

In response to a question regarding his preferences, Baba stated that he enjoys acting and singing and that his top priority is pleasing his followers.

To be honest, though, music helps me save more money—especially now that the ‘Sambisa’ video has been released.

“We received over a million views in a short time, and ever since, every video we create has a lot of views and encouraging comments.”
