 Zainab Hassan Background

Well, I am Zainab Hassan, 27 years old from Suleja in Niger State. My father is a Palestinian shepherd who found himself in Suleja and settled after being in almost all parts of the country. My mother is from Katsina, but her family now lives in Kogi state.

However, I lost my mother when I was young, and that’s why I later moved to Kogi State, where I completed my primary and secondary education. Now, after high school, I went back to Kaduna to live with my sister.

This is where I was able to continue my education, and later I got a job in the medical field. When I was in Kaduna, because I was interested in entering Kannywood, I discussed my plans with a friend who later introduced me to Ibrahim Sodangi.

Sodangi then asked me to give him a little time, so that whenever a new project arises, he would contact me.

Luckily, later he called me to come and appear in their new movie “KUFAINA”. Even though it was my first film, I did my best – maybe that’s why the producer was so impressed. I suffered in the film because it was shot during fasting.

And because I played an important role – moving from one place to another – and the situation was also very hot, I considered the film as one of my most difficult situations. But overall, since I was determined to succeed in the industry, the film was a huge success.

In general, I appeared in movies like ‘Hussaina da Hassana’, ‘Kufaina’, ‘Auren mu Dole’, ‘Salim’, ‘Zarafi’, ‘And Wutar Kara’. I have been involved in more than 10 successful films. We ask God to bless him with grace, amen.

Before offering a newcomer a job, the industry is said to have a habit of inviting them to have sex. How has your experience been thus far?

To be honest, I knew a lot about the industry even before I entered it. In addition to the sex controversy, I was informed that some Kannywood females have a bad reputation, are stingy, and will stop at nothing to land a decent role.

In contrast, no one has urged me to give up my femininity for money, a leading position, or anything else of that kind up to this point in our conversation. I’ve met folks in the industry who are just as kind as people in other fields.

The problem is, that people don’t necessarily need to talk about us because we are always in the public eye. Some people don’t realize that our only goals are to uplift and educate society.

The majority of what you see in our movies is a straightforward, expert depiction of the creators’ ideas. We live in a Muslim environment, by the way, and we are aware that eventually we will get married and have kids who will watch our movies.

I believe that one cannot afford to be careless with their life for this one particular reason alone. There are bad apples in every industry; the only thing, in my opinion, is that there are people who don’t wish us well and are always casting us in a poor light.

Are you currently in a committed relationship? If yes, how do you think it might impact your acting career down the road?

A 27-year-old woman can be interested in a relationship, but it is a personal matter for me. Furthermore, even if marriage develops over time and occasionally surprises you, it is not something I can control.

But one thing is for sure—I want to succeed professionally and stay here for as long as possible. I can still work in the profession as a producer, director, or screenwriter after I am married.

In addition, I want to continue my education and, if I can, start an NGO to help the underprivileged in the community.

The majority of the people I used to observe in Kannywood—people I prayed to meet in person—are now my associates, which makes me pleased. Not only am I one of them, but some of them want to see me as well.

Against this backdrop, I would like to say that Kannywood is home to many gifted performers and actresses.

In essence, I am having fun in my field, and I encourage anyone interested in joining me to do so, as the majority of the stories they have heard about what goes on in the profession are untrue.

Many Kannywood women who had previously married returned to the industry in a short amount of time. People reportedly don’t wish to marry Kannywood women out of concern that your people won’t utilize your marriages.

How do you feel about that?

Before I respond, allow me to ask you this: Where is Masura Isa, who married Sani Danja and had a successful marriage? Where is Muhibat Abdulsalam, who married Hassan Giggs and had a great marriage? Shuaibu Lilisco has been happily married to his Kannywood bride for the past 13 years.

The problem is that the majority of people who approach us for marriage are not sincere. Some would come hoping to have a good time, and if they didn’t get us for as little money as they had been told, they would then bring up the subject of marriage.

Once they were married and seemed to have everything they desired, they would start to cause issues that would eventually result in a divorce.

Nobody is discussing the happy marriage of Safiya Musa or any of the many others. Everyone is talking about how we don’t use our marriages.

If you were to visit our local courts, you would hear about cases of failed marriages daily. The majority of persons involved are not Kannywood and Kano natives. We always function as a single family.

A woman can be worthless anywhere, even at home with her family, if that is her desire. The world has changed because of technology, as a young person may now access all inappropriate stuff from their phones.

Therefore, we ought to adapt to it.

Let’s learn that nothing worthwhile comes easily and that not everything that seems shiny is gold.

In my opinion, it is better to stay with the devil you know than the one you have never met; therefore, if I marry someone I love, I will surely take advantage of it because even if I divorce him as a woman, I will still marry someone else.
