Emily VanCamp Career
1998–2002: Career beginnings
VanCamp developed an interest in acting in 1998 after seeing her sister Katie on the Ladies Room movie set. She began attending acting classes on Saturdays, acquired a representative, and worked on a few commercials. She was then cast in “The Silver Sight,” the second installment of a special three-part episode of the Canadian children’s horror anthology television series Are You Afraid of the Dark?, opposite a 17-year-old Elisha Cuthbert. VanCamp’s persona appeared in a single scene but did not have any conversation.
In the Emmy-nominated CBS TV film Jackie Bouvier Kennedy Onassis and a brief appearance on the YTV sitcom Radio Active, VanCamp then played an adolescent Jackie Bouvier. She played Jessica Paré’s sister in a supporting role in the lesbian drama Lost and Delirious the following year. She also made another appearance on television in an episode of the short-lived medical horror series All Souls, where she played a hit-and-run victim with spinal injuries. VanCamp also appeared in the TV movie Redeemer, which was produced by Graeme Clifford and aired in early 2002, as well as the miniseries Dice, which was helmed by Rachel Talalay.
2003–2010: Breakthrough and television work
VanCamp’s big break came at the age of 15, when Kevin Williamson, the creator of Dawson’s Creek, placed her as Sam Dolan, a series regular character, in the WB mid-season series Glory Days (also known as Demontown in Europe). The horror mystery earned a few favorable reviews, but it was cancelled after nine episodes due to poor viewership. Former Dawson’s Creek writer Greg Berlanti was impressed with VanCamp’s portrayal of the primary character’s younger sister. He “desperately wanted to work with her” because of how much Katie Holmes’ performance reminded him of her.
She was cast in his upcoming first program on the WB, Everwood. Amy, played by VanCamp, the daughter of Dr. Abbott, quickly befriends Gregory Smith’s character, Dr. Brown’s son Ephram. The ties between the two families, and especially those between Amy and Ephram, received a large amount of attention throughout the show. During the course of the show’s run, she received four Teen Choice Award nominations and one Young Artist Award nomination for the part, in which her character dealt with drugs, sadness, and isolation from her family.
The thrillers No Good Deed and A Different Loyalty, as well as Rings, a horror short film that connects the events of The Ring and The Ring Two and directly ties into her appearance in the first scene of the second film, were all projects in which VanCamp acted while taking breaks from Everwood.
Carriers, a post-apocalyptic horror movie directed by VanCamp and released in 2009, was shot in the summer of 2006. Early in 2007, an episode of the eighth season of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit was broadcast, in which her drug-addicted character Charlotte Truex is unable to recall the events surrounding the murder of her mother. Additionally, the independent drama Black Irish, in which she plays Kathleen McKay, the teenage sister of Michael Angarano’s character Cole, premiered.
VanCamp’s second significant role occurred at the age of 20, when Brothers & Sisters, an ABC drama that creator of Everwood Greg Berlanti was showrunning, immediately offered her the job of a regular midway through the first season. The Walkers are an affluent family that run a food business, and the Jon Robin Baitz-created series follows their life. Rebecca Harper, played by VanCamp, is revealed to be their patriarch’s long-hidden kid after his death.
VanCamp was a regular on Brothers & Sisters throughout the first four seasons of the program, and she made a cameo appearance in a few episodes of the fifth and final season to wrap up the plot of her character. She managed to star in the independent drama Norman in the middle of 2008 while working on the show, earning her only wins to date from the San Diego Film Festival and the Breckenridge Festival of Film. She plays Norman Long’s girlfriend in the movie, the main character, who is played by Dan Byrd and claims to have cancer. In addition, VanCamp played Esther, Ben-Hur’s wife, in the two-part television movie Ben Hur, the most recent adaptation of Lew Wallace’s 1880 novel.

VanCamp played Stacey Bess, a real-life person, in the Hallmark Hall of Fame film Beyond the Blackboard. On April 24, 2011, CBS broadcast the movie. The ABC thriller Revenge, which received a series order in May 2011, then cast her as Amanda Clarke/Emily Thorne. Revenge, the first TV program VanCamp genuinely starred in, earned her a lot of attention and many Teen Choice Award nominations.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie Captain America: The Winter Soldier, VanCamp co-starred as Sharon Carter, the great-niece of Peggy Carter, who was portrayed by Hayley Atwell and a potential ally of Chris Evans’ titular hero. The movie’s premiere date was April 4, 2014, and it was filmed from April to June 2013. In the 2016 follow-up Captain America: Civil War, the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the animated series What If…?, and the 2021 film, VanCamp reprised her role as Black Widow.
VanCamp played the lead role in the independent drama The Girl in the Book, which began filming in New York City in the middle of June 2013. The movie, which is based on a true story, revolves on Alice (VanCamp), a 28-year-old assistant book editor and aspiring writer. On June 17, 2013, the movie’s creators began a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for its post-production. On July 1, the campaign successfully reached its $65,000 target.
