Shiladitya Chetia Biography
Tuesday in Guwahati, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer in Assam committed suicide after learning of his wife’s cancerous death.
Shiladitya Chetia, an IPS officer from the 2009 batch, went on leave for four months while holding the position of Secretary in the State’s Home and Political Department.
It was assumed that he had taken time off to attend to matters concerning his wife’s illness.

Shiladitya Chetia, an IPS officer from the 2009 batch, is survived by his two sisters because he and his spouse did not have children.
In the previous few months, he had lost both his mother and mother-in-law.
Shiladitya Chetia, the Assam Home Secretary, shot himself on Tuesday inside the intensive care unit following the death of his wife a short while earlier.
Chetia killed himself with his service firearm, according to the police.
He has previously been the district SP for Tinsukia and Sonitpur.
The sad event prompted a response from the state DGP as well
. “Unfortunately, Sri Siladitya Chetia, IPS 2009, Secretary Home and Political took his own life this evening, a few minutes after the attending physician declared the death of his wife who had been battling cancer for a long time,” the man wrote in a post on X.
The Assam Police family as a whole is deeply grieving.
A group of CID and forensic officers have also been dispatched to the hospital in the interim.
Who was Shiladitya Chetia?
Shiladitya Chetia, the Assam Home Secretary, joined the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 2009.
He held positions as Commandant of the 4th Battalion of the Assam Police and Superintendent of Police (SP) of the districts of Tinsukia and Sonitpur before being appointed the state’s Home Secretary.
Chetia’s dad worked as a police officer as well.
Two sisters survive him.
Chetia was childless with his wife. In the previous few months, he had lost both his mother and mother-in-law.

Shortly after the doctor reported his wife’s death, he took his own life.
According to the police, Chetia’s wife had cancer for a considerable amount of time.
