Let’s take a little trip down memory lane. When did you start your first business venture, and what was it?
When I was twenty years old, my first business was selling yogurt during the 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. school breaks at Loretto Convent Musongari High School and the International School of Kenya. I made a sale of the yogurt from my friend’s car trunk, which I had teamed with. At six in the morning, we picked up the yogurt from a farm in the Kenyan town of Limuru. We went back every two days to replenish our supplies.
I was working as a hairstylist during this time, mostly doing hair for wealthy people. Seeing yet another chance, I regularly used discounted courier tickets to travel to London and buy luxury products that were unavailable in Kenya at the time for resale. I provided my clients with these items.
You seem restless. Why do you keep creating companies serially rather than just sticking to one, and milking it for all it’s worth?
I start businesses one after the other because I think that Africa will be the next great economic frontier and that we need to establish local institutions to foster this expansion.
Of all the companies you’ve built, which was the most challenging and the most fun?
Wananchi was an exhilarating experience where we attempted to refute the notion held by competitors, government officials, and regulators that the Internet was not just important for the wealthy. Of the three, Wananchi Online was the most enjoyable, but Ignite has proven to be the most difficult. At present, my attention is on my completely owned companies’ business locations in Nairobi and Toronto.
Through the lengthy development process of Ignite Consulting, I have learned the actual value of time, performance, and project management—all of which are essential for a consultant’s ability to stay in business. On the other side, succession planning and prompt exits must be managed. I plan to turn the companies over to business drivers so they may hire a CEO or sell the management to grow them to the next level.
What have been the biggest impediments you’ve encountered in all your years of doing business?
The biggest challenge I have personally faced is managing each brand’s promise and value while developing a business. Social media and the Internet offer excellent means of rapidly disseminating information on advancements, alterations in interests, and activities. These communication tools tend to confuse consumers and inside businesses, if they are neglected or poorly handled. Even though the rules of engagement have changed, many corporate cultures still adhere to antiquated methods of doing business that are irrelevant in today’s globalized marketplace.
What was the biggest lesson you’ve learned in business?
In the business world, you have to assume accountability for all that you and your company do for the enterprise. You have to pay attention at all times and accept responsibility for the good, the bad, and the ugly.
What is your philosophy in business and life?
I evaluate myself according to how I performed about the chances and problems of today. I have a strong desire to see everyone grow, including myself. The several vibrant, youthful kids I have had the honor of working with over the years have humbled me and given me a great deal of strength. For me, success is measured by added value rather than just monetary compensation. This needs to be examined further in both the initial and subsequent rounds.
In a nutshell, what is the most important piece of advice you’ll give to young, entrepreneurial-inclined individuals out there- particularly the ladies?
It’s similar to learning to ride a bike or drive a car, ladies. All you have to do is have faith in your abilities, follow your intuition, and create a well-defined plan or strategy. Keep things straightforward and carry out your plan step by step with bravery, conviction, and most importantly, love. In the end, have an open mind, be adaptable, alter direction when necessary, and pay attention to your clients.
