Surjit Patar (born Surjit Hunjan) (14 January 1945 – 11 May 2024) was a Punjabi writer and poet from Punjab, India.

Surjit Patar Background

Patar hailed from hamlet Pattar (Punjabi: ਪੱਤੜ) Kalan in Jalandhar district, where he derived his surname.

After graduating from Randhir College in Kapurthala, he earned a Master’s degree from Punjabi University in Patiala and a PhD in Literature from Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar on the “Transformation of Folklore in Guru Nanak Vani”.

He then entered academia and retired as a Professor of Punjabi at Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana.

In the middle of the 1960s, he began writing poems. His poetry includes “Hawa ਵਿਚ Likhe Harf” (Words inscribed in the Air), Birkh Arz Kare (Thus Spake the Tree), Hanere Vich Sulagdi Varnmala (Words Smouldering in the Dark), Lafzaan Di Dargah (Shrine of Words), Patjhar Di Pazeb (Anklet of Autumn), and Surzameen (Music Land).

He has translated into Punjabi Federico García Lorca’s three tragedies, Girish Karnad’s play Nagmandala, and poems by Bertolt Brecht and Pablo Neruda.

He’s also adapted plays by Jean Giradoux, Euripides, and Racine. He has authored telescripts for Punjabi poets ranging from Sheikh Farid to Shiv Kumar Batalvi.

He was president of the Punjab Arts Council in Chandigarh.

He formerly served as the President of the Punjabi Sahit Akademi in Ludhiana.

He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2012.
