Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure born on January 15, 1978, serves as the Minister of State for Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory. She was previously the commissioner of higher education in Kano State. She was appointed by Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure Early life and education

Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure was born on January 15, 1978, in Bunkure, Kano State. She attended Bunkure Primary School, then Arabic Secondary School Tudun Wadan Dankade for Junior Secondary School, and finally, Government Girls Science Secondary School Garko to complete her secondary education.

She subsequently attended the College of Art and Remedial Studies in Kano State for her IJMB, where she received a high score that allowed her to begin her university study at Level 200 at Bayero University Kano.

She graduated from Bayero University Kano in 2005 with a degree in medicine.

She worked as a housekeeper at Murtala Specialist Hospital in Kano. She went on to complete her Youth Service at the National Meteorological Centre in Plateau State.

She completed her NYSC and then began her residency at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital. After graduating, she joined the West African College of Physicians and worked as a consultant family physician.

On November 5, 2019, she was named Honorable Commissioner (Ministry of Higher Education) for Kano State.

After the state-owned tertiary education institutions were closed for seven months owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, she announced the date of their reopening on October 26, 2020.

Mariya Mahmud is Kano’s new minister nominee

President Bola Tinubu has nominated Kano State’s Mariya Mahmud for the position of Minister. If the Senate confirms her appointment, the medical doctor will become the second woman from northern Nigeria’s most populous state to be appointed minister since 1999.

Mrs. Mahmud succeeded another lady and schoolmate, Maryam Shettima, as one of Kano State’s two nominees.

The replacement was mentioned in Mr Tinubu’s communication and read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio at plenary on Friday.

Mrs Mahmud served as the Commissioner for Higher Education in the administration of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.
