Press revealed in mid-March 2023 that police had raided City of Cape Town employee Malusi Booi, a member of the Human Settlements Mayco, at his offices in the Civic Center. Due to ongoing investigations into claims of fraud involving housing tenders totaling millions of Rand, the SAPS Commercial Crimes Unit oversaw the operation.

During the operation, SAPS took devices and paperwork out of the offices. Colonel Andrè Traut, a police spokesperson, attested to it. Geordin Hill-Lewis, the mayor of Cape Town, allegedly promised to take decisive action against corruption and fraud inside his administration. In reaction to the raid, he suspended Booi and named Alderman James Vos as the acting Mayco member for Human Settlements.

The inquiry is in its early stages, but it could be serious and involves allegations of fraud and corruption, the mayor stated. According to the SAPS, further information cannot be released at this time.
