Hardik Pandya Biography

Hardik Pandya Early Life

Hardik Pandya was born on October 11, 1993, in Choryasi, Surat, Gujarat.

His father, Himanshu Pandya, owned a modest car finance company in Surat before closing it and relocating to Vadodara when Hardik was five years old to provide better cricket training facilities for his boys.

Himanshu Pandya works as a loan agent in Vadodara.

He enrolled his two sons in Kiran More’s cricket academy in Vadodara.

Due to financial constraints, the Pandya family lived in a leased apartment in Gorwa, with the boys driving a second-hand car to the cricket stadium.

Hardik attended MK High School until the ninth grade before skipping out to focus on cricket.

Hardik made consistent improvement in junior cricket, and Krunal claims he “won a lot of matches single-handedly” in club cricket.

Hardik said in an interview with the Indian Express that he was dismissed from his state age-group teams owing to “attitude problems”.

He explained that he was “just an expressive child” who did not “like to hide his emotions.”

According to his father, Hardik was a leg spinner until the age of 18 and switched to fast bowling at the request of Baroda coach Sanath Kumar.

Hardik Pandya Indian Premier League

Pandya represented the Mumbai Indians in the IPL from 2015 until 2021.

In a must-win situation for the Mumbai Indians to stay in the playoff race, he hit 61 runs off 31 balls to lead his team to victory, earning him his second Man of the Match award of the season.

The Mumbai Indians released Pandya ahead of the big auction for the IPL 2022 season. He was later picked by the new Ahmedabad franchise, the Gujarat Titans, and named captain.

In 2022, he guided Gujarat to their first IPL title, being the first captain since Shane Warne to do so.

In the IPL 2023, Pandya once again led Gujarat Titans to the finals, however, they were defeated by Chennai Super Kings by five wickets via DLS.

Pandya returns to the Mumbai Indians for the IPL 2024 after two seasons away. He was announced as the captain of the team, replacing Rohit Sharma.

Hardik Pandya International Career

Pandya made his Twenty20 International debut for India on January 27, 2016, at the age of 22, taking two wickets against Australia.

His first Twenty20 International wicket came against Chris Lynn. In the second T20I against Sri Lanka at Ranchi, he batted ahead of Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni, scoring 27 from 14 balls before falling to Thisara Perera for a hat-trick.

In the 2016 Asia Cup, Pandya scored an 18-ball 31 to help India beat Bangladesh.

Later on, he took a wicket to secure the victory. In his second encounter against Pakistan, he bowled his best figures of 3 for 8, limiting Pakistan to 83.

On March 23, 2016, Pandya got two key wickets in the final three deliveries of India’s World Twenty20 match against Bangladesh, resulting in a one-run victory.

His career-best bowling stats of 4 for 38 were obtained in the third and final Twenty20 International against England on July 8, 2018, when he scored 33 not out in 14 balls and hit the winning runs with a six off Jordan.

Hardik became the first Indian to grab four wickets and score more than thirty runs in the same T20I match.

In September 2021, Pandya was picked to India’s team for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

However, Pandya failed to have the intended impact. He scored 11 against Pakistan, and India lost by ten wickets. His later innings of 23 against New Zealand did not aid India’s chances in the tournament, as a loss to New Zealand meant India was eliminated from the World Cup despite victories over inexperienced nations such as Afghanistan, Scotland, and Namibia.

Pandya was selected as an all-rounder. However, he only bowled two overs against New Zealand, taking no wickets and conceding 17 runs.

His lack of runs and failure to contribute with the ball caused him to be dropped from the squad for the T20I series against New Zealand following the World Cup.

In June 2022, Pandya was selected as India’s captain for the T20I series against Ireland.

Pandya scored 51 runs off 33 balls in his first T20 international half-century against England on July 7, 2022, at Southampton’s Rose Bowl.

Pandya also got four wickets, becoming the first Indian player to score a half-century and take four wickets in the same T20 international encounter.

In April 2024, Hardik Pandya was selected as vice-captain of the Indian squad for the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup event.

He became the fourth Indian to be selected player of the match on ODI debut, following Sandeep Patil, Mohit Sharma, and K. L. Rahul.

In his maiden ODI innings as a batsman, he scored 36 runs off 32 deliveries. In the group stages of the ICC Champions Trophy, Pandya smashed three consecutive sixes off Imad Wasim in the same over before rain halted play. On June 18, 2017, in the Champions Trophy final at the Oval, he hit a 43-ball 76 in a losing effort after coming in with India at 54/5 following a top-order collapse.

ESPNcricinfo named him to its ODI XI for 2017.

In April 2019, he was named to India’s Cricket World Cup team. Pandya played his 50th one-day international on June 27, 2019, against the West Indies.

On July 17, 2022, Pandya bowled an ODI career-best 4-24 against England at Old Trafford. His 71 runs in the second innings of the same match made him the first Indian player to score a half-century and capture four wickets in an ODI since Yuvraj Singh in 2011.

Hardik Pandya Controversy

In January 2019, Pandya appeared on Koffee with Karan with teammate K. L. Rahul and made some offensive comments that sparked quick public outrage.

During the conversation, Pandya discussed how he proudly informed his parents about his first sexual encounter, which was positively accepted.

He also stated that he enjoys “observing how women move” in high-end pubs and nightclubs, as well as on social media, and went on to compare himself to a black person, saying, “I’m a little from the black side, so I need to see how they move.”

The people labeled his diatribe as vulgar, insulting, misogynistic, and shameful.

Pandya apologized for his words, explaining that he had gotten carried away by the nature of the show.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) replied to the incident by saying, “It will be considered whether players should even be allowed to appear on such non-cricket TV shows.”

The BCCI regarded the comments to be crude, misogynistic, and cringeworthy, and was unimpressed with the apologies, pursuing proper legal action as a breach of conduct.

Both Pandya and Rahul were suspended pending an inquiry and were pulled from their current tours of Australia and New Zealand.

Furthermore, on January 13, 2019, Gillette canceled its brand association with Pandya for its Mach3 razor.

On January 24, 2019, after easing the suspension on Pandya and Rahul, the BCCI stated that Pandya would rejoin the squad for the matches in New Zealand.

Pandya returned to the Mumbai Indians in November 2023, following two seasons with the Gujarat Titans, and was later named captain, succeeding Rohit Sharma.

The decision has been a source of significant controversy, and Pandya has been booed by the audience.
