Controversy
In an unprecedented move by any chief of the Nigerian apex bank, Godwin Emefiele ventured into partisan politics against the dictates of the Central Bank Act, which states that the occupant of the governor’s position must remain apolitical and independent at all times to preserve the bank’s nonpartisan posture.
Emefiele sparked widespread outcry in May 2022 when he announced his intention to run against President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2023 presidential election.
What began as a rumor when campaign posters for the bank chief inundated the capital city of Abuja quickly gathered traction when a group of purported rice farmers purchased the All Progressive Congress’ presidential form for CBN Governor.
Emefiele rejected the presidential nomination form and stated his intention not to run in a series of tweets from his verified account.
In a surprising turn of events, Emefiele filed a case in Abuja’s Federal High Court, requesting that the court order the electoral commission and the attorney general’s office not to prevent him from running for president.
The court declined the request but invited the duo to make a formal presentation explaining why Emefiele’s motion should not be granted.
Nigerians and civil society organizations have filed multiple court cases demanding the dismissal of the CBN Governor and accusing him of breaking numerous clauses of the Central Bank Act.
Suspended as Central Bank Governor
President Bola Tinubu removed him as Central Bank Governor with immediate effect on June 9, 2023, according to a statement released by Mr Willie Bassey’s office as Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
The suspension follows an ongoing inquiry into his office as well as proposed reforms in the financial sector of the economy.
Emefiele was directed to take over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate) Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, who will operate as the Central Bank Governor until the conclusion of the investigation and the reforms.
Arrests by DSS
On June 10, 2023, the Department of State Services (DSS) reported Emefiele’s arrest at 14:28 WAT via their official Twitter feed.
He was taken in for questioning in connection with the investigation into his office, and a short video footage of him stepping out of an executive Hilux car in a close walk accompanied by DSS police into a waiting private jet went viral in the media.
He was charged in July 2023.
He was re-arrested by the DSS on July 25, 2023, at the Federal High Court in Lagos.
