Antoine Carraby, best known by his stage name DJ Yella, was born in Los Angeles, California, on December 11, 1961. He is an American DJ, rapper, record producer, and director of motion pictures.
Along with Dr. Dre, DJ Yella started his career as a member of the World Class Wreckin’ Cru. He later became the least outspoken but longest-serving member of the groundbreaking gangsta rap group N.W.A, which was originally made up of Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, MC Ren, Arabian Prince, and Eazy-E. One Mo Nigga ta Go, his first and only studio album, was dedicated to Eazy-E and released in 1996 by Street Life Records. He abandoned the music business after the album’s release to become a pornographer video director until 2011, when he began production on a new album called West Coastin.
He was admitted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016 as an N.W.A. member.
DJ Yella Early life
On December 11, 1961, Antoine Carraby was born in Compton, California, and grew up there. He developed a deep love for music early on. He learned to play the drums while growing up and listened to funk music. He performed as Yella, a stage name he adopted as a teenager after being inspired by Mr. Yellow of the Tom Tom Club, in numerous clubs throughout Los Angeles. DJ Yella Career
When she was a teenager, Yella started DJing at a nearby bar called Eve After Dark. He met aspiring DJ Dr. J there, who would later join N.W.A as Dr. Dre. A modest four-track studio was located in a rear room of Eve After Dark. Yella and Dre recorded a number of demos in this studio. They made a song called “Surgery” during their first recording session. The World Class Wreckin’ Cru, which was founded by Yella and Dre in the early 1980s and released its debut album in 1985 on the Kru-Cut label, was influenced by Grandmaster Flash.
The group would go on to become well-known figures in the early to mid-1980s West Coast electro-hop scene. Prior to the group’s official creation, “Surgery” was recorded and published. It became their first hit, selling 50,000 copies just in Compton. Additionally, DJ Yella and Dr. Dre provided mixes for local radio station KDAY, which increased listenership for The Traffic Jam during the afternoon rush hour.
Together with Dre, Yella worked on the three N.W.A albums, the first of which was a compilation album with millions of copies sold, as well as Eazy-E’s debut album Eazy-Duz-It. Together with Dr. Dre and Arabian Prince, Yella co-produced the 1989 album No One Can Do It Better by The D.O.C., which was also produced by Dre, as well as Michel’le’s self-titled album and J.J. Fad’s gold-certified debut (Super Sonic). Jerry Heller saw Dr. Dre and Yella’s collaboration in his 2006 memoir Ruthless. He said that the two had a “almost eerie understanding” as they created high-caliber rhythms and compositions with almost any words or whole phrases needed to be spoken.
After the contentious dissolution of N.W.A, Yella kept close to Eazy and continued to perform producing work for Ruthless Records. The gold-selling hit single “Foe tha Love of $” from Bone Thugs-N-Harmony’s Creepin on ah Come Up EP, Menajahtwa’s album Cha-licious, and tracks from H.W.A.’s Az Much Ass Azz U Want E.P. (all three from 1994) were all produced by him. He also worked on Yomo & Maulkie’s Are U Xperienced? He also worked on Eazy’s last album, Str8 off the Streetz of Muthaphukkin Compton, which was released in 1995, approximately a year after his AIDS-related mortality.
As a tribute to Eazy-E, Yella’s 1996 first solo album One Mo Nigga ta Go, which featured Kokane, B.G. Knocc Out, and Dresta, rappers from the Ruthless “family tree,” was released on Street Life Records. The album’s highest point was at number 23 on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and number 82 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.
Following the release of this album, he left the music industry to begin a 12-year career as a director and producer of pornographic movies. Yella claims to have created more than 300 adult movies.
A new album with the name of West Coastin’, which Yella started working on in November 2011, was planned for release in the summer of 2012. By 2022, this album has still not been released.
Neil Brown Jr. portrayed Yella in the 2015 N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton. He is shown to be particularly interested in ladies and sex, as well as being less violent than the other members and averse to sparring with Ice Cube.
