Despite being named in the murder trial, Mr Adeyanju was released and acquitted after four years of prosecution in 2009. He was remanded in detention throughout the trial.
The police stated that the case was not properly finished, implying that Mr Adeyanju may have jumped bail. Nonetheless, they did not immediately charge the activist with murder, instead holding him for days without trial, in violation of Nigerian law, which bars detention of a suspect for more than 48 hours without charge.
After several weeks in incarceration, Mr Adeyanju was granted release by the Kano State High Court on February 18. However, his associates raised an alarm a few days later, accusing court officials of stalling his release as part of a conspiracy to prevent him from voting in the election.
Legal commentators contended that Mr Adeyanju may have been a victim of double jeopardy, a constitutional concept that prohibits a citizen from being tried more than once for the same act.
Mr Adeyanju, a critic of the Buhari administration, claimed that his arrest was unjustified, politically motivated, and intended to keep him away from the public after the presidential election.
The election took place on February 23, and President Muhammadu Buhari was declared winner for a second term.
