Personal life
Stein was born on January 5, 1950, to Jewish parents in Brooklyn, New York. He was expelled from Midwood High School in Brooklyn, where he had attended as a student while growing up, because of his long hair. Stein received a diagnosis of pemphigus vulgaris, an uncommon autoimmune skin condition, in 1983. He was looked after by Debbie Harry, who was then his partner, and he has since regained normal function. Stein had a mild case of the illness, which he was able to manage with a steroid regimen. From 1978 to 1982, Stein co-hosted the public-access television cable program TV Party in New York City.
Stein and Harry had a romantic relationship while they were in Blondie, but they never got married. Although the pair parted ways in 1985, they have kept up their professional collaboration. Stein and Barbara Sicuranza, an actress, were married in 1999. They have two daughters, Akira and Valentina.
