Babajide Sanwo-Olu Biography

Olusola Babajide Sanwo-Olu(born on June 25, 1965) As of 2019, —a Nigerian politician—has been Lagos State’s governor.

In October 2018, he challenged and unexpectedly defeated incumbent governor Akinwunmi Ambode in the APC gubernatorial primaries. He was elected governor on the All Progressives Congress platform. He holds degrees from the University of Lagos, the John F. Kennedy School of Government, the London Business School, and the Lagos Business School. He served as the managing director and CEO of the Lagos State Property Development Corporation (LSPDC) prior to pursuing his bid for governor.

From 1994 until 1997, Sanwo-Olu served as the treasurer at the erstwhile Lead Merchant Bank before transferring to the United Bank for Africa to serve as the head of the foreign money market. He then moved on to work as a divisional head and deputy general manager at First Inland Bank, Plc (now First City Monument Bank). He served as the First Class Group Limited and Baywatch Group Limited’s chairman.

Later, he was appointed as the interim commissioner for economic planning and budget until 2007, when Bola Tinubu, the then-governor, named him as the commissioner for commerce and industry. Sanwo-Olu was chosen by Governor Babatunde Fashola to serve as Commissioner for Establishments, Training, and Pensions following the 2007 general elections. In 2016, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode appointed Sanwo-Olu as Managing Director/CEO of the Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC).

His noteworthy accomplishments in the public sector include managing projects for the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) that are being privatized. He established the Lagos Security Trust Fund and served as its first chairman of the board. Subsequently, on his orders, the Control & Command Center in Alausa Ikeja and the LAGBUS System were built.

Sanwo-Olu officially stated his desire to run for governor of Lagos State on September 16, 2018, under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC), making him a serious challenger to the position’s current governor, Akinwunmi Ambode.

Major players in Lagos State politics, including the Governor’s Advisory Council of the Lagos Chapter of the All Progressives Congress and members of the Lagos State House of Assembly, supported his declaration, which forced Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, a candidate for governor running on the platform of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos, to withdraw from the race.

On October 2, 2018, he triumphed in the All Progressives Congress’s primary for governor of Lagos. Akinwunmi Ambode, the governor of Lagos, and 63 political parties supported Sanwo-Olu’s candidacy at the APC flag-off event on January 8, 2019. At the 2019 Lagos State governor’s election, which was held on March 9, Sanwo-Olu easily defeated his rival Jimi Agbaje to win the position of governor of Lagos State. On Wednesday, May 29, 2019, he took the oath of office as the 15th governor of Lagos State in Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) on Lagos Island.

Road construction in important parts of Lagos State is one of the development projects he has been working on. In order to improve traffic conditions in that region, Sanwo-olu recently requested that the Fela Kuti statue that Akinwunmi Ambode had up on Allen Avenue in Ikeja be taken down. The statue, however, is rumored to have been moved to a more practical location in the State. In addition to other projects, he started the Oshodi-Abule-Egba BRT Lane in 2020.

He was reelected governor under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the 2023 Lagos State gubernatorial election held on March 18. He did so by defeating AbdulAzeez Olajide ‘Jandor’ Adediran of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who came second runner up, and Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party (LP), who came in first.
