Mercedes Grabowski gave birth to Ames on August 23, 1994 in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. She was born and raised in Petawawa, Ontario, and eventually relocated to Colorado Springs. She spent her formative years as a military brat, including some time living close to Canadian Forces Base Petawawa because both of her parents were in the military.
When Ames was 12 years old, her father sent her to live in a group home because he didn’t believe her claims that her paternal grandpa had often assaulted her as a youngster. Ames wed Kevin Moore, an Evil Angel director and producer of porn.
In the weeks before her passing, Ames claimed that a traumatic childhood had caused her to develop bipolar depression and dissociative identity disorder (multiple personalities). She said: “Some days I’ll be fine and if I’m not doing anything I’ll get these awful flashbacks of my childhood and I get very depressed and I can’t get out of bed and cancel my scenes for like a week or two.”

Ames was scheduled to engage in a pornographic scene in December 2017, but she pulled out after learning that her co-star had made an appearance in gay pornography. Ames posted the following on Twitter on December 3:
Social media users criticized and abused the tweet. Ames was forced to take a cyanide pill by pansexual performer Jaxton Wheeler, who subsequently confessed he regretted it. The following tweet from bisexual Ames defended her right to pursue her sexual freedom.
Ames, who was 23 years old, was discovered dead in a park in Camarillo, California, on December 5, 2017, two days after she posted the tweet. The Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that she committed herself by hanging herself and suffocating. She had cocaine, marijuana, the antidepressant sertraline (Zoloft), and the anxiolytic alprazolam (Xanax) in her system at the time of her death, according to toxicology findings from her autopsy. Close friends said that her suicide was caused by cyberbullying.
After her husband, Kevin Moore, persuaded journalist Jon Ronson and his producer to check into the cyberbullying that he claimed had caused Ames’s death, Ronson and his producer covered an investigation into her suicide in the Audible series The Last Days of August. In the episode, Ronson digs into the cyberbullying part of the story before focusing more on Moore’s involvement in Ames’s death by researching their previous interactions and Ames’s history of mental illness. Ronson comes to the conclusion that Ames’s bad mental health was caused by a number of persons close to her, and he finds parallels between Ames’s suicide and the fictitious suicide of the little girl in J. B. Priestley’s 1945 play An Inspector Calls.
The August Project, a hotline created by Moore, and Pineapple Support, a non-profit organization founded in April 2018 by British performer Leya Tanit, were two initiatives within the industry that were proposed to deal with the issue in the wake of Ames’s death and the deaths of several other adult performers that year.
