What led you to choose your stage name?

I chose to use the Hausa word “ji” as my stage name since my mother had always wanted me to be a good guy.

How would you characterize your art?

I am an avid rapper, R&B, and pop singer. My art is communicative; I rap, sing, and make songs about life and relationships.

What is the story of your entry into the music industry?

began my career in 2011 with my pals because we thought we could try Hausa rap, R&B, and pop if other tribes could sing and rap in their tongues.

We were fortunate to have YNS Studios Kaduna, a recording studio, at home, which allowed us to perform live.

Akon, P-Square, Lil Wayne, Eminem, and John Legend served as great inspirations for me. I’ve put some tunes on tape and distributed them.

Love You, Baby, Daina Bina, Qusa Ft Shamsy, Yar Fara Ft Feezy, and Something are a few of them. Masoyiya Ta, Saboda Ke, and Mai Kudi are the others.

I shared the same stage with artists like Yemi Alade, Ice Prince, MI, 2Face Idibia, and many more in December 2015 at KADAMFEST (Kaduna Music Festival).

Alongside Dj AB, Feezy, Lil Prince, and Mr. Kebzee, I also performed with other Yaran North Side performers.

People in the public has also acknowledged my efforts. For the popular song Daina Bina, I was given an award by Paki’s Collection in December 2018.

I was also given a recognition award as the “Artist of the Year” by the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at ABU Zaria in 2018.

Do you agree with the belief that being in Lagos is necessary for one to succeed commercially?

I am aware that Lagos used to be the most well-known location in Nigeria for music marketing, but things changed as time passed and technology advanced.

Given how the Internet is changing the Nigerian music industry, I now think it is still possible to have a good music career here in the North and advance somewhat without having to travel to other states.

It is now possible to share music digitally and to sell it for a profit both domestically and internationally, from any state in Nigeria.

Additionally, I think that we can succeed in the North if society and the government support us.

How does music help you pay your expenses when the entertainment sector is known for a select few making enormous profits?

Music has allowed me to go to places I never would have imagined, thus we are grateful to God for his unceasing blessing.

I was a nobody before it converted me into someone.

Bills are paid by the entertainment industry, but not to the amount that most people believe.

What have been your venture’s highs and lows?

I’ve only just started my career, yet I’ve already established myself as a well-known Nigerian musician on major global music platforms like Apple, Spotify, YouTube, and Google Music.

With any luck, in five years I will be a multi-time Grammy Award winner, a legendary Nigerian musician, and well-known worldwide.

Why are more Northerners involved in modern music?

Most people select modern music because they want to be able to operate on a worldwide scale.

Still, since Hausa is spoken widely worldwide, I think using it in contemporary music would also be profitable, much like Yoruba, Igbo, and Igala musicians in Lagos.

Rap, pop, and R&B songs from Hausa would become internationally recognized as the language expanded.

Why didn’t you select traditional music, such as that of the illustrious Mamman Shata?

Our choice of modern music stems from our desire to stand out from the crowd in the North. Traditional music, such as Mamman Shata and others, was always present in the past.

Since we seek professional music standards in the North, I guess we are the first to sing old songs in a modern way.

GeeBoy YNS: I study at the university and listen to modern music

Geeboy, a musician, Abdullahi Abdullahi, claims that music brings him happiness and that he is now pursuing a degree in music.

Or did Yaran North Side disintegrate?

What caused them to stop listening to their music together two days ago?

We have been listening to the music of Yaran North Side, a well-known Hausa hip-hop artist, for the past two days.

Led by Faruk Abdullahi, alias Likitre, the Yaran North Side are musicians from the same home.

Well-known vocalists Dj Abba, Teeswag, Jigsawmujee, and Geeboy with Feezy are currently in the north of the nation with their respective groups.

With their Hausa hip-hop music, YNS, as they are known, have been entertaining northerners for a long time.

They are crucial in promoting songs in the Hausa language that help to advance northerners’ culture.

The vocalists of several songs, including “Wabab” and “Su baba ne,” have performed in northern state cities as well as other parts of the nation.

As they are known, they are babas; in the realm of music, they resemble the voice of the young people from the north.

Rumors are circulating that the singers are at odds because some believe they were denied the opportunity to showcase their talent to the public after performing songs together for years.

Similar to this, we have been listening to the songs of the YNS family, particularly Teeswag and Dj Ab, as they are well-known worldwide.

We therefore pose the question: Do all YNS members advance individually through their music, or are music-making abilities limited to a select few?

The North Side boys said in an interview with the hip-hop show Arewa24 that they want their music to be heard everywhere and that they want to use their music to promote Northern culture.

How will they accomplish their objectives in the event of a dispute between them?

We enjoy listening to their music and are proud of them. We wish to clarify the true cause of the low number of people who sing in their yards.

Likitre released a stanza in one of their songs that reads, “We have come to surprise them; YNS has made an effort, so people should come with their cups to be surprised.”

We’re prepared to witness the revelation.
