Sturm was born in Almere, Flevoland, on November 19, 1981. In 1997, a scout for Elite Model Management found her in Almere. She soon entered the Dutch Elite Model Look Competition. In 1997, the International Elite Model Look Contest in Nice, France, was won after this one. At the time, Sturm was 15 years old. She signed exclusive deals with Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein after winning. She also served as a Victoria’s Secret model.
