Former Zuma aide Vincent Magwenya has been appointed as Ramaphosa’s new spokesperson

President Cyril Ramaphosa has named one of former President Jacob Zuma’s spokespeople as his new spokeswoman.

The Presidency stated on Tuesday that Ramaphosa had appointed Vincent Magwenya, effective June 1.

“Mr Magwenya is a seasoned communicator with extensive experience in government communication, public relations, stakeholder management, and broadcasting,” the statement states.

He worked as former President Jacob Zuma’s spokesperson from 2009 to 2010. When he resigned in July 2010, it was claimed that he had fallen victim to infighting within the president’s office.

He got more concerned about the manner ANC officials controlled access to the president.

Magwenya reportedly argued with Zizi Kodwa, a special presidential advisor at the time, and Lakela Kaunda, the head of Zuma’s private office.

Kodwa is now a deputy minister in the Presidency, overseeing state security. He has also been implicated in the Zondo Commission’s reports on state capture.

According to the statement, Magwenya was CEO of PR agency Magna Carta from 2013 to 2016 before founding Conversations Media & Communications, where he is currently CEO.

Magwenya has also worked as Director of Communications for Standard Bank Africa and Director of Group Stakeholder Relations Management for Standard Bank Group.

He began his career as a broadcast journalist, holding various technical and editorial positions for international and local broadcasters such as Reuters Television, Worldwide Television News (now Associated Press Television News), the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and the South African Broadcasting Corporation.

According to the release, Ramaphosa stated:

“I would like to thank Tyrone Seale for acting as the President’s spokesperson since July 2020. His professional demeanor and dedication to the task have received widespread recognition and are greatly appreciated.”

Seale took over the post when Ramaphosa’s former spokesperson, Khusela Diko, departed on “special leave” in June 2020 because of a PPE corruption scandal involving her late husband, amaBhaca chairman Thandisizwe Diko.

He allegedly obtained an unlawful COVID-19 PPE tender from the Gauteng health department worth R125 million. The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) concluded that the tender was improper and unlawful.

A disciplinary process for her failing to disclose her financial interests in enterprises as required by public service standards was finished in August 2021.

Diko received a written warning for this offense, and her suspension was reversed.

She did not, however, continue her duties as Ramaphosa’s spokesperson, instead moving to “a different position in the public service”.
