Mbedu was born to a Zulu mother and a Sotho and Xhosa father at Midlands Medical Centre in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. Her Zulu grandmother, who took on the role of legal guardian for her after both of her parents passed away while she was a young child, raised her in the Pelham neighborhood.
