Shanquella Brenada Robinson Death

On October 29, 2022, shortly after arriving in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, Shanquella Robinson was declared clinically dead at 5:57 p.m., under circumstances that remain controversial and disturbing.

Around 2:13 p.m., a physician from the American Medical Centre, Dr. Karolina Beatriz Ornelas-Gutiérrez, was called to attend to Shanquella, who was reported by her companions as being ill due to “excessive alcohol consumption.”

Dr. Ornelas found her dehydrated, disoriented, and verbally unresponsive, but in a stable condition.

Despite the doctor’s recommendation for hospital treatment, her travel group insisted she be treated in the resort room.

By 4:13 p.m., Shanquella suffered a tonic–clonic seizure, and her condition rapidly declined.

An ambulance was called at 4:20 p.m., and paramedics arrived around 4:49 p.m., performing 14 rounds of CPR, administering five doses of adrenaline, and six defibrillator shocks, but to no avail.

Meanwhile, the initial police report listed the cause of death as alcohol poisoning, with no signs of trauma.

However, a forensic autopsy conducted on November 4, 2022, and released publicly on November 5, revealed her true cause of death as severe spinal cord injury and atlas luxation, a violent neck injury, estimating she died within 15 minutes of the trauma.

This contradicted the alcohol poisoning claim and pointed to violent circumstances.

Despite this, no arrests have been made, though Mexican authorities have classified the case as femicide, and the U.S. Department of State acknowledged the incident, stating they were monitoring it closely.

Shanquella Brenada Robinson: Conflicting Accounts Raise Family’s Suspicions

During an interview on ABC News’ Good Morning America, Salamondra Robinson, mother of Shanquella Robinson, revealed that her family grew increasingly suspicious of Shanquella’s travel companions due to their inconsistent and contradictory stories about what happened during the trip.

Some group members claimed that a maid found Shanquella unconscious, while others said they called a doctor.

Another stated it was the apartment concierge who contacted medical help.

Initially, the group told her family that Shanquella had died from alcohol poisoning, but days later, some admitted there had been a physical fight, with suggestions that she had been jumped.

The confusion deepened when the accounts of where Shanquella was found also conflicted.

One said she was found on the floor, another claimed in bed, and a third told her father, Bernard Robinson, that she was discovered in a chair.

In a CBS News interview, Salamondra expressed skepticism about the alcohol poisoning claim, especially since no doctor had yet arrived when that diagnosis was made.

She had urged the group to take Shanquella to an emergency room, but they lied, saying her travel insurance didn’t work in Mexico and that the ER required $5,000 in cash before treatment.

Doubts intensified when the autopsy report revealed that Shanquella had died from a broken neck, not alcohol poisoning.

In an interview with Queen City News, Salamondra said her daughter’s body, upon return to the U.S. on November 12, bore clear signs of trauma: a knot on her head, swollen eye, bruised face, and a busted lip.

Her funeral was held on November 19 at Macedonia Baptist Church in Charlotte, North Carolina.

For over two weeks, the Robinson family tried to persuade U.S. and Mexican authorities to treat her death as suspicious and worthy of a full investigation.

On a GoFundMe page launched for legal expenses, Shanquella’s sister, Quilla Long, vowed the family would not give up.

“The U.S. State Department claimed there was ‘no clear evidence of foul play’, yet a video is circulating of a woman violently attacking Shanquella,” she wrote. “This statement is unacceptable.

We are beyond devastated and will continue to fight for the truth.”

Early Media Coverage by Mexican Journalists:

Gerardo Zuñiga, a regional journalist based in Baja California Sur, was one of the first to cover the murder of Shanquella Robinson.

He had previously reported on the death of another American, Rodney Davis, who was kidnapped and murdered while hiking.

In mid-November 2022, local police tipped off Zuñiga and other journalists that another American tourist, Shanquella, had died just four days after Davis.

Rumors began circulating, especially among Winston-Salem students, about a video showing a brutal incident involving Shanquella.

Leaked Video Raises Alarming Questions:

A disturbing video surfaced on Twitter and other platforms, showing a naked African-American woman, later confirmed by Salamondra Robinson to be her daughter, being viciously beaten by a female acquaintance inside their vacation rental.

The video shows the attacker in a frenzied rage, punching Shanquella in the head, yanking her by the neck, and throwing her to the floor.

The beating continued as the attacker kicked her in the head and delivered more blows before walking away.

At least two other people were in the room. One male recorded the assault, and another individual filmed him.

A voice can be heard saying, “Quella? Can you at least fight back? At least sum’in’’?”, to which Shanquella softly replied, “No!”, indicating her unwillingness to engage in violence.

The video triggered widespread shock, anger, and outrage on social media, sparking questions as to why no one intervened to help the victim.

Many questioned how individuals involved in or witness to what appeared to be a violent assault or possible femicide were able to leave Mexico and return to the U.S. without facing arrest or interrogation.

Second State Attorney General Investigation:

On November 16, the Baja California Sur State Attorney General’s Office reopened its investigation into Shanquella Robinson’s death, now treating it as a potential femicide.

Officials confirmed that investigators had revisited the crime scene and were gathering additional evidence to fully clarify the circumstances surrounding her death.

In an official statement, the Attorney General’s Office said:

“The State Attorney General’s Office (PGJE) of Baja California Sur is conducting field and office work to clarify the facts involving the death of a foreign woman on October 29, at a beach club in San José del Cabo.

On October 29, around 6:15 p.m., authorities received a report from public security about a deceased woman in a residence within the Fundadores Beach Club area.

Criminal investigators promptly arrived, conducting initial investigations under proper protocols.

Experts processed the scene, collecting clues to include in the investigation.

PGJE is pursuing all lines of inquiry to collect more evidence for an accurate understanding of the events, without ruling out any possibilities.”

Local media further reported that authorities are also probing the conduct of the doctor, two local police officers, and the state attorney investigator for possible negligence, misconduct, and failure to perform their duties properly.

FBI Investigation:

On November 18, the FBI’s Charlotte, North Carolina, field office confirmed it had opened a separate investigation into Shanquella Robinson’s death in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, on or about October 29, 2022.

Due to the ongoing nature of the inquiry, officials declined to comment further.

A spokesperson clarified:

“Our investigation is completely separate from Mexico’s. We are not privy to their actions.”

Local news also reported sightings of FBI agents at the crime scene in Los Cabos.

However, on April 12, 2023, U.S. authorities announced that they would not pursue criminal charges related to Shanquella Robinson’s death.

Criminal Charge of Homicide:

On November 23, Daniel de la Rosa Anaya, Attorney General of Baja California Sur, announced that a court-issued arrest warrant was issued for an American suspect identified as the “direct aggressor” in Shanquella’s death.

In an interview with the local outlet BCS Noticias, he clarified that Robinson did not die from alcohol poisoning or injuries from a fight but from a “direct assault,” causing a spinal cord fracture.

The Prosecutor’s Office coordinated with Mexican federal prosecutors and U.S. officials to:

Initiate all necessary procedures

Request an Interpol Red Alert for the suspect’s location in the U.S.

Work on formal extradition proceedings to bring the suspect back to Mexico.

The Governor of Baja California Sur, Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío, echoed these details, noting that the case was initially reported as an accident but later classified as a femicide following the investigation.

Local reports confirm that an arrest warrant exists for one of Shanquella’s travel companions, though no official charges have been filed as of yet.
