Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate Biography
Muhammad Ali Pate CON (born September 6, 1968) is a Nigerian physician, politician, and the country’s current Minister of Health and Social Welfare, having been appointed in 2023.
He is also a Professor of Public Health Leadership at Harvard University’s Department of Global Health and Population. He formerly held the position of Global Director of Health, Nutrition, and Population.
He also directs the World Bank Group’s Global Financing Facility for Women, Children, and Adolescents (GFF). Pate is also the previous Minister of State of Health in Nigeria.
Pate, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and Amina J. Mohammed received Nigeria’s national awards on Tuesday, October 11, 2022. Pate was granted Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).
Pate joined the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health as the Julio Frenk Professor of Public Health Leadership in 2019.
His nomination as Minister of State for Health in July 2011 came after he served as Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency in Abuja.
He resigned from this job effective July 24, 2013, to become a Professor at Duke University Global Health Institute in the United States. He was once the CEO of Big Win Philanthropy.
Pate will return to Harvard University on September 1, 2021, as the Julio Frenk Professor of the Practice of Public Health Leadership at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
Muhammad Ali Pate was appointed CEO of GAVI (the Vaccine Alliance), which aims to supply immunizations in low-income countries, in February 2023.

Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate’s Early life and education
Muhammad Ali Pate was born on September 6, 1968, in what is now the Misau local government area of Bauchi State, Nigeria, and grew up in the country’s north. He is the offspring of a Fulani herder.
Pate finished high school and enrolled in the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) medical school in Kaduna State, Nigeria.
After graduating from ABU, he relocated to Gambia and spent a few years working in rural hospitals. He later became a fellow in infectious diseases at the University of Rochester Medical Center in the United States.
He is an American Board-Certified MD in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases who also holds an MBA (Health Sector Concentration) from Duke University in the United States.
Before this, he attended University College London and earned a Master’s in Health System Management from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, United Kingdom.

Pate joined the NPHCDA in 2008 after a 10-year career at the World Bank in Washington, D.C., where he held several senior positions, including Senior Health Specialist and Human Development Sector Coordinator for the East Asia/Pacific Region and Senior Health Specialist for the African Region.
Pate oversaw a large project at the World Bank to improve the health system in Africa, East Asia, and other regions.
Notably, he initiated a breakthrough public-private cooperation to replace a national referral hospital in Lesotho.

Pate has two boys and four daughters from his marriage. Northern Nigeria is where he lives. He follows the teachings of Islam. In his birth village, Pate is known as “Chigarin Misau,” which is the equivalent of a local knighthood.

Muhammad Ali Pate is the director of the Global Financing Facility for Women, Children, and Adolescents, the global director of the World Bank’s Health, Nutrition, and Population Global Practice, and the Julio Frenk Professor of the Practice of Public Health Leadership in Harvard Chan School’s Department of Global Health and Population.
Pate, a Nigerian and American national, served as the CEO of the UK-based Big Win Philanthropy until recently. Before this, he was the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s health minister.
Pate began working on health issues in Africa, East Asia, and the Pacific after joining the World Bank Group in 2000. He has worked with some of the nations most impacted by HIV/AIDS, TB, and malaria in his contributions to the World Economic Forum and the World Bank Group. He has also led initiatives that have led to major reforms in healthcare systems and disease control worldwide.
Pate is a physician with training in infectious diseases and internal medicine. He holds an MBA from Duke University with a diploma in health sector administration and a master’s degree in health system management from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
