Kapeloso Kholeka Currently serving as South Africa’s Public Protector is attorney Gcaleka. After Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane was suspended on June 9, 2022, she assumed the role of Acting Public Protector, having previously held the position of Deputy Public Protector. The National Assembly voted on October 19, 2023, to recommend Gcaleka as the fifth person to fill the role of Public Protector.

Gcaleka’s candidacy for the position of Public Protector was resisted by the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), who said that she was an unfit choice. On November 1, 2023, President Cyril Ramaphosa officially appointed Gcaleka to her seven-year term as Public Protector.

“The DPP’s authority to carry out her responsibilities is undermined by her current salary, which sees her earning significantly less than the executive management of the institution over which she shares oversight,” the man claimed.

Gcaleka attended the University of KwaZulu-Natal to study law, where she graduated with an LLB in 2003. Nor does the desire for knowledge end there. Additionally, the newly appointed Public Protector has a master’s degree in commercial law from the University of Johannesburg.
