Born on November 18, 1970, Michael Elliot Epps is an American actor and stand-up comedian. In addition to playing Day-Day Jones in Next Friday and Friday After Next, he also made appearances as “Black Doug” in The Hangover and The Hangover Part III.
In Open Season 2, he voiced the lead character Boog, taking Martin Lawrence’s place as the actor who played Roscoe Jenkins’s cousin “Reggie” in the comedy Welcome Home. In the movies Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004) and Resident Evil: Extinction (2007), he portrayed Lloyd Jefferson “L.J.” Wade. In the sitcoms Uncle Buck and The Upshaws, he played lead parts.

Acting
In 1997, Epps made her screen debut in Strays, Vin Diesel’s second feature picture. Then, in 1999, Epps was chosen to co-star with Ice Cube in the follow-up film, Next Friday. After seeing Epps perform a stand-up performance, Ice Cube urged Epps to try out for the part of Day-Day Jones, which led to weeks of tryouts. Subsequently that year, Epps appeared in 3 Strikes as a cameo and backed Jamie Foxx in Bait.
Epps voiced Sonny the Bear in the 2001 movie Dr. Dolittle 2, and he closed the year in the comedy How High, starring Method Man and Redman, as Baby Powder, a pimp. In 2002, Epps and Ice Cube came back together to play the dimwitted burglar to Cube’s bounty hunter in All About the Benjamins. Two years later, they collaborated once more on Friday’s follow-up film, Friday After Next. After Martin Lawrence turned down the part, Epps went on to voice Boog, another bear character in the 2008 movie Open Season 2. Along with hosting the 2010 BET Hip Hop Awards, Epps also released the stand-up comedy special Under Rated & Never Faded in 2010.
In the 2012 reimagining of Sparkle, Epps featured with Jordin Sparks and Whitney Houston in his first non-comedic role as Satin, the major antagonist who is having an affair with the sister of the titular character while working as a stand-up comic by day and a cruel and abusive drug kingpin by night. Both reviewers and viewers praised Epps’s performance. Epps was cast as Richard Pryor in a Pryor biopic that was supposed to be directed by Lee Daniels in 2014, but the film has stalled in its development. Epps did play Pryor in two HBO drama series: Winning Time (an episode about the Los Angeles Lakers) and the 2016 movie Nina Simone.
Meet the Blacks, a 2016 comedy horror film, and The House Next Door: Meet the Blacks 2, its 2021 sequel, both starred Epps. In addition, he played the lead role in the 2016 sitcom Uncle Buck, which ran for just one season. He has been a regular cast member of The Upshaws on Netflix since 2021.

In his native Indianapolis, Mike Epps was also well-known for serving as CEO of Naptown Records.
He signed local musician Philthyphil in 2006. This artist was just freed from prison following a three-year sentence for a drug indictment in which he was implicated as a large-scale drug distributor. The $175,000 record agreement was eventually canceled after Phillip “Philthyphil” White was accused of first-degree murder in Oakland, California in 2007.

Disability activists have blasted Epps for making fun of children with physical and mental disabilities in his stand-up routine.
Epps allegedly attacked fellow stand-up comic LaVar Walker outside the Uptown Comedy Club on June 1, 2014. Epps and two of his bodyguards allegedly took action in retaliation when Walker released a parody video featuring Epps and comedian Kevin Hart. One of the other two males is accused of throwing the victim’s smartphone and smashing his prescription glasses, while Epps allegedly punched him in the face and kicked him in the stomach and back. Two days later, on June 3, Atlanta Police issued an arrest warrant for Epps.
Epps faced backlash in the middle of 2017 after he brought a kangaroo onto the stage at one of his performances. Numerous people observed that the animal appeared upset, as Epps grabbed and restrained it against its will. Later, Epps expressed regret, claiming that the incident was entirely spontaneous and that he would never harm an animal.
