In these videos, Gillis joked about Chinese people using the ethnic slur “chink”. Gillis declared in a tweet later that evening that “I’m a comedian who pushes boundaries” and that “if you go through my 10 years of comedy, most of it bad, you’re going to find a lot of bad misses.” If someone has been really upset by anything I’ve said, I would be happy to apologize.” A representative for the show’s co-creator, Lorne Michaels, revealed that Gillis had been cut from the cast four days later.
Gillis later said that although the video snippets were poorly edited, they were taken out of context, and most of the newspapers that covered the incident had misquoted him. Gillis added that “literally 5 minutes of being pressured to write anything” was the reason he immediately regretted using the “I’m a comedian who pushes boundaries” comment. He also acknowledged that the phrase was “corny” and formally repudiated it.
Continuation of stand-up, sketch, and comedy specials (2020–present)
Theinterrobang’s Sixth Annual Comedy Awards recognized Gillis as “2019’s Stand-Up Comedian of the Year” in January 2020.
Shane and comedian John McKeever debuted the web series Gilly and Keeves in December 2020. The series featured comedic sketches with Gillis and McKeever, including “ISIS Toyota,” “Uncle Daycare,” and “Trump Speed Dating.”
