Thomas was born to Gladdy Lou Ryder, a special education teacher in the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District, in Greenwich, Connecticut.
She attended UCLA School of Theater, Film, and Television, where she eventually earned her degree in 1980, after graduating from Santa Monica High School in 1975.
