Lessons of Life

1. Although the aging process begins gradually at age 50, it accelerates at the age of 58, even though your mind remains very young.

I had a fixed mental image of myself at the age of 40; it was only when I met my granddaughter that I realized I was now a grandfather.

2. When you see those you cared for as youths or children grow into moms and fathers, it reminds you of your age. One of them just invited me to preach at a program, and I realized that many bridges had been crossed.

3. Another concern is your appearance. I suddenly discovered my hair was graying more. Thankfully, my father was not bald.

My wife is so concerned about my grey hair that she insists on keeping it short. She is quite concerned when my hair isn’t cut.

I’m wondering if she’s in denial about our aging. Consider how much our women spend on wigs and attachments to cover up their grey hair; this is an attempt to hide the aging process.

  • My sympathy is primarily for the women. I instantly observed the wrinkles on my forehead and how my breasts began to resemble those of a woman. I noticed how much effort women my age put in to hide the signs of aging.

4. My mind is much more productive now. Experience, reflection, and revelation have given me a deeper understanding of issues.

My predicting talent is almost prophetic. It combines observation, contemplation, and analysis of occurrences and events.

  • You realize that things aren’t as straightforward as you imagined. When I was younger, I assumed that every troubled child was the fault of the parents. However, I’ve realized that even if you make every attempt to be the finest parents possible, a child can make his or her own decisions.

Nowadays, I blame the adult offspring, not their parents. Joseph chose to be different from his brothers.

5. At the age of 60, you re-evaluate your denomination’s and the church’s teachings and practices.

If your intellect is still working, you might question how you ever believed some of the things religion taught you.

If you are independent-minded and still receive guidance from the Holy Spirit, you wish to correct these myths.

  • At 60, I am not frightened to tell the truth. A lot of what we do in church is based on men’s customs.

6. My experience at the age of 60 has taught me that the majority of people are hypocritical.

Marriages are not what we portray to the public.

Most families have common challenges, yet everyone tries to pretend that everything is fine.

  • When your wife is 58 and you are 60, she is considered a fellow man in the family. She is even the head of a larger party involving your children. They see you in terms of your severity. They make judgments that exclude you unless they encounter difficulties. Your wife and children form a separate party in your home, but you are the minority leader.

7. Write as many novels as you can before turning 60. Read as much as possible. Read before 60 because your sleep pattern will change.

Second, you will find yourself solving other people’s issues, and unless you are careful, you will not have enough time for yourself.

8. At 60, my desire for sex, food, and fashion is at its lowest point. The good news is that I now have almost everything I wanted in life. Another advantage is that my obligation to society now pays for my happiness.
