Chris Young was born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, on June 12, 1985. When he was younger, he went to Trinity United Methodist Church. His grandfather, Richard Yates, was a performer on a famous radio show called the Louisiana Hayride.

On August 13, 2013, Chris Young was traveling to a concert in Montana when a small cut on his leg got infected and caused him to go into septic shock, which made him very sick.
He was taken to a hospital in Denver, where doctors gave him medicine and he had surgery the next day to fix the infection. After surgery, he rested at home for a while before getting back on tour on August 22.
Then, in June 2014, Chris had to cancel a show at the CMA Music Festival because he accidentally cut his hand with a kitchen knife, and he needed surgery to fix it.
