Ali Bongo Ondimba has been married to Sylvia Valentin Bongo Ondimba (born 11 March 1963) since 1989. On October 16, 2009, her husband was inaugurated as president of Gabon, making her the country’s first lady. In order to better the fate of weak and oppressed people all around the world, she established the Sylvia Bongo Ondimba Foundation, “For the family,” in January 2011. Sylvia Valentin, who was born in Paris, had just turned two months old when her parents were relocated to Douala for employment. She is the daughter of Edouard Valentin, a French businessman who ran Omnium Gabonais d’Assurances et de RĂ©assurances (OGAR, Gabonese Insurance and Reinsurance; passed away on January 28, 2019). Evelyne Valentin, Edouard Valentin’s wife, later worked as the president of Bongo Ondimba’s secretary.

Before the family moved to Tunisia, Sylvia and her siblings spent the majority of their youth in Cameroon.
