Abducted UNIABUJA Professors and Four Others Regain Freedom After Coordinated Rescue

Six individuals, including three senior staff of the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA), have been successfully rescued three days after being abducted by gunmen at the university’s staff quarters in Gwagwalada Area Council, Federal Capital Territory, in early November 2022.

How the Abduction Happened

The shocking incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, when armed men breached windows and forcefully entered the staff residences.

The operation lasted over two hours, during which six people were taken, including professors and family members.

Eyewitnesses described the aftermath as chaotic, with rooms and personal belongings scattered all over the compound.

Joint Rescue Operation Yields Success

In a statement released on Friday, 4th November, the FCT Police Command spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, confirmed the successful rescue, saying:

“The Federal Capital Territory Police Command wishes to inform members of the public that all abducted victims of the University of Abuja were rescued and reunited with their families through a joint operation with other security agencies.”

The rescue mission was conducted by a joint task force, comprising various security operatives from federal and local agencies, showcasing improved inter-agency collaboration in combating rising insecurity.

No Ransom Paid | ASUU Confirms

Dr. Kasim Umar, chairman of ASUU, UNIABUJA Chapter, clarified that no ransom was paid for the release of the victims.

The university community has expressed gratitude to the authorities for the swift intervention.

“We are thankful to the security agencies for ensuring the safe return of our colleagues without negotiating with the criminals.”

The abduction of university professors from their staff quarters sparked nationwide concern, highlighting the increasing vulnerability of academic communities to criminal activities, even in the nation’s capital.
