Ibrahim Gaidam Biography
Nigerian politician Ibrahim Gaidam was born on September 15, 1956, and has been the Minister of Police Affairs since 2023.
Before this, he was the governor of Yobe State from 2009 to 2019 and a senator representing the Yobe East senatorial district from 2019 to 2023.
Gaidam took over as governor of Yobe State on January 26, 2009, after Governor Mamman Bello Ali died. He had previously served as Ali’s deputy from 2007 until 2009.

Ibrahim Gaidam’s Early Life and Background
Ibrahim Gaidam was born on September 15, 1956, in Bukarti village, Yunusari local government region, now in Yobe State.
From 1974 to 1979, he studied at the Borno Teachers’ College (BTC), Maiduguri, where he earned a Teachers’ Certificate.
Between 1981 and 1983, he studied at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, where he graduated with a diploma in accounting.
He later returned to Ahmadu Bello University, graduating in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and joining the Nigerian Society of Certified Public Accountants.
Ibrahim Gaidam Public service career
Ibrahim Gaidam, an accountant, served in many government ministries in the former Borno State, which became Yobe State.
He served as the Assistant Director of Finance at the Directorate of Foods, Roads, and Rural Infrastructure, as well as the Acting Director of Finance and Supplies in the Yobe Information and Culture Ministry.
Ibrahim Gaidam left public service in 1995, when he was named Commissioner for Youths and Sports, and later Commissioner of Commerce and Industries.
He returned to the civil service and from 1997 to 2007, he was a Director in the State Finance Ministry and Permanent Secretary in several different ministries.
Ibrahim Gaidam’s Political Career
Ibrahim Gaidam was elected Yobe State’s deputy governor on the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) platform in April 2007 and sworn in on May 29, 2007.
He was sworn in as governor of Yobe State on January 27, 2009, following the death of Governor Mamman Bello Ali in Florida due to a liver condition.
Mamman Ali’s brother, Alhaji Abubakar Ali, was appointed as the new deputy governor.
Gaidam was appointed chair of the ANPP’s tactical committee for the 2011 election.
After the Boko Haram extremist Islamic cult incited violence and riots in northern Nigeria in July 2009, the Northern Governors’ Forum (NGF) convened an emergency meeting in Kaduna to examine security concerns.
Of the nineteen governors of northern Nigeria, only Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu of Niger, Mohammed Namadi Sambo of Kaduna, and Ibrahim Gaidam of Yobe attended in person.
Ibrahim Gaidam sent a Sallah goodwill message to the people of Yobe State at the Eid el-Kabir celebration in November 2009.
In his lecture, he warned adolescents against being incited to violence by selfish religious professors and rumor mongers, alluding to the bloodshed in July 2009.
He urged all Muslims to work together and coexist peacefully with adherents of other religions in the state.
On April 26, 2011, Gaidam was elected to his first full term as governor.
On April 11, 2015, Gaidam was re-elected to his second term as governor.
Geidam was elected senator for Yobe East in the 9th NASS on March 23, 2019.
