What led you to pursue DJing as a passion?
I used to work on a laptop for social studies when I was in secondary school. I was a boarder at the time.
After graduating from college in 2017, I happened to find a small entry-level controller in my dad’s room.
“Okay, let me see how this works,” I thought to myself. So, I started exploring it.
Mixing music came naturally to me, and I always believed I could add my unique flavor to other people’s creations.
Although I wasn’t a producer at the time, DJing seemed like a creative outlet for me. It was through this that I realized how passionate I was about it.
What inspired you to pursue a career in DJing professionally?
Well, there were a lot of people saying, “You’re doing this, you’re not doing this.”
From 2017, I told myself, “I’m doing this.” But it wasn’t until last year that I felt the pressure to decide. At the time, I was considering returning to school to pursue a master’s degree and other academic endeavors.
Then, I got contacted by a club that wanted a resident DJ.
Interestingly, my paperwork never came through, but I decided to go ahead and take the job anyway. After that, I kept getting hired.
I told myself, “You know what, I’ll give this my full attention and make it my career.”
However, I had already been DJing before then. Even though I had done several small-scale events, I never considered myself a professional DJ. I just did it because I was passionate about it. It wasn’t until May of last year that things started to change.
Did your folks disagree with you when you made that choice?
No, they have always supported my DJing journey because my dad was a DJ himself in his younger years.
He will encourage you if you express an interest in pursuing music.
That’s just the kind of person he is. If you mention anything beyond that, he’ll just stare at you. But if you tell him you want to pursue music, he’ll say, “Yeah, yeah.”
What is the background to your stage name?
It all started with Caesar. DJ Caesar was never a name I had; it was simply because I liked Julius Caesar.
I chose the name because I admired his character and how he carried himself. In early 2021, someone told me, “Caesar is a boring name, you need to put something in front of it.” I had no idea at the time.
Then, I was listening to a turntablist named DJ Craze. He was watching an interview with Kanye, where Kanye said, “Dopeness is what I like the most.”
I thought, “Wow, I could just put Dope in front of Caesar,” and it felt right. Even before I introduced myself as Dope Caesar, people would comment on my performances saying, “Damn, that’s dope.”
Does that imply that a project is underway?
Yes, a project is underway. But I won’t share any details just yet.
In what ways have you used social media to build your brand?
We’re still adjusting to social media, but we can see its potential. Advertising through it has been incredibly efficient and cost-effective. My team and I are on the move. I’ll leave it at that for now.
