Meet Zee Preetty
My name is Zulaihat Ibrahim, and I was born in Lagos State. I am a 27-year-old model, dancer, and actress in the Kannywood film-making industry and Nollywood. I am from Rubba Dankuwa Local Government Area of Kebbi State in Northwestern Nigeria, and I am currently a student at Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto.
What brought you to Kannywood?
Honestly, my original goal was to learn how to become a model; I had no intention of becoming an actress. But I eventually discovered that acting was where it all began and that’s how I got to where I wanted to be as a model.
My true ambition was to become an influencer, and I really thought that modeling would enable me to do that. In an attempt to amuse people, I began by posting little comedies of myself to my Instagram feed. I eventually started drawing a sizable following of admirers.
If my memory serves me correctly, I began acting in 2017. I was first exposed to Kannywood through well-known filmmaker Sunusi Oscar, mostly through music videos. Later on, I was exposed to various film projects and FKD Production, which is run by the well-known actor Ali Nuhu.
After watching your movie, how did your parents respond?
My decision and professional choice were known to my parents. They didn’t challenge me when I started acting because they understood it was all an attempt to get where I wanted to be.
Zee is a professional dancer and comedian in addition to being an actress. Could you elaborate on this?
It’s widely believed that I am the only female comedian in Kannywood, and that’s not by accident—I’ve worked hard to establish an identity for myself as an actress, which is why I was featured in numerous music videos following my personal videos. I also love dancing, which is why I’m passionate about it.
On the set of your first movie, how did you feel?
It went so well on my first outing. People were really impressed with how I performed in the role that was assigned to me. I began watching a show called “Zamantakewa.” I performed so well that several of the directors and producers who came to the spot were really impressed with my outing.
Later on, I received other film deals, including ones for the movies Akushi, Inda So Da Kauna, Ace Da Masoyi, Bakauye, and Sagegeduwa.
The truth is that I didn’t feel any different, and based on my own admission and what I’ve heard from others, I performed really well for a beginner.
Did what you encountered after joining the industry match your first impression of it?
The acting profession is similar to all others. There are two types of people: good and bad. I’m sure I’ve heard a lot of tales about the business, some of them intriguing and some of them frightening. I entered this field with a certain goal in mind, and that goal is all I focus on at all times.
Even though I’m still in the business, my character and demeanor haven’t altered. I came across a really welcoming group of intellectuals from many sociocultural backgrounds; they are incredibly accepting and progressive, in contrast to what we were taught to think before we joined.
Do you think your goal of being a model has been achieved?
Indeed, I would. Right now, I serve as a brand ambassador for several brands all over the continent. Additionally, modeling has given me the chance to pursue a career as an influencer.
Now that your ambition has come true, would you leave the film industry?
Not really; acting has brought me to this point and it was just my first step. To be honest, I can’t give up on it just yet. This is to let you know that I would not hesitate to accept an opportunity to further my acting career.
What, in your opinion, has set you apart?
As a female comedian, my material is centered around current events that have an impact on the broader audience. Through my humor, I convey messages to decision-makers and people impacted by such policies.
As a female comic, how do you feel?
I feel fantastic; I entered this field, which was previously dominated by men, and I had an influence. I consider myself really fortunate since I created my own character and I believe I am doing well with it. I haven’t imitated anyone else’s persona.
Because of this, choosing a stage name wasn’t too tough for me; Zee Pretty was created by combining my given name, Pretty, from my childhood, with my true name, Zulaihat. When I was little, I had a little statue, and people would often call me “Mai Kyau,” which translates to “the pretty.” That’s how I came up with Zee Pretty as my stage name, and I think it fits well with the type of work I do.
Could you share your experience from season three of Gidan Badamasi as a star?
In all honesty, the best TV show I have ever appeared in is Gidan Badamasi. We had a great time at the beginning of the TV show, and the series allowed me to fully showcase my talent.
What caused your accent to be Sokoto?
I spent some time to settle on the Sokoto accent that I primarily employ in my comedies after researching other accents to see which one best suited me. Among other accents, I’ve tried the Hausa-Yoruba and the Hausa-Gbagy. I gradually learned that my audience had come to associate my Sokoto dialect with me, and ever since then, I have made it my signature.
Does Zee Pretty have a significant relationship?
Well, I’m not
Why
The reason is because I don’t have the correct one.
