Yusuf Tanko Sununu Biography
Yusuf Tanko Sununu (born February 2, 1967, in Kebbi State) is a politician from Nigeria’s All Progressives Congress. On August 21, 2023, he was named Minister of State for Education by Bola Tinubu’s Cabinet. Sununu represents Yauri/Shanga/Ngaski Federal Constituency in the National Assembly.

Who Is Yusuf Tanko Sununu?
Yusuf Tanko Sununu Early Life
Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu was born in Ngaski town, Kebbi State, on February 2, 1967. His father, Malam Attahiru Salihu Sununu, known as Malam Tanko, was a highly regarded educationist and local government official. His mother, Hajiya Aminatu, was from the well-known Gidan Shawai in Ngaski.

Dr. Yusuf received his early Islamic education under the guidance of the late Sarkin Malamai, Malam Yunusa Unguwar Rimi Ngaski. He began attending Ngaski Primary School in 1975 and graduated in 1981. In 1981, he was admitted to the Government Secondary School Koko.
In 1983, he passed the former Sokoto State Ministry of Education’s Science Schools Examination and was sent to Government Science Secondary School Yauri, where he graduated in 1986.
In the same year, he was admitted to the College of Education Sokoto, today known as Shehu Shagari College of Education. However, at his father’s insistence, he enrolled in the matriculation program at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.
After finishing the program, he was accepted into the same university’s Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program. However, due to issues with college accreditation, he was relocated with his classmates to the University of Maiduguri in 1992, where he completed his degree program.
He was granted provisional registration with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) in 1996, the year he completed his MBBS. In 1996/1997, he worked as a House Officer at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital in Sokoto.
After finishing his Housemanship, he obtained full registration with MDCN. The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) assigned him to Ekiti State, where he worked at the Government House Clinic in Ado-Ekiti. In 1999, he returned to Kebbi State and was assigned to the General Hospital Argungu as a medical officer.
In 2000, he was relocated to the Government House facility as the Personal Physician to Kebbi State’s then-Executive Governor, Alhaji Muhammad Adamu Aliero, and was also in charge of the facility.
Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu began his Fellowship studies in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital in Sokoto in April 2005. He joined the West African College of Surgeons as a Fellow in April 2010.
The same year, he returned to Kebbi State and was appointed as a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, as well as the head of the Fati Lami Maternity Department at Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital in Birnin.
He remained there until October 2011, when he shifted his post to the Federal Medical Centre Birnin Kebbi. In February 2012, he attended the renowned World Laparoscopy Hospital in Gurgaon, New Delhi, where he earned the Fellowship of Minimal Access Surgery (FMAS) and the Diploma in Minimal Access Surgery (DMAS).
When Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu returned from India, he was appointed Head of the Laparoscopy Unit and was tasked with creating and training laparoscopic surgery in the hospital.
The unit achieved national acclaim and trained a large number of practicing laparoscopic surgeons. In July 2019, he resigned from his position as Chief Consultant Special Grade 1 at FMC Birnin Kebbi to pursue partisan politics.
He ran for and won the election to represent Kebbi State’s Ngaski, Shanga, Yauri Federal Constituency in the Federal House of Representatives as an All Progressives Congress candidate. Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu is now serving his second term in the federal House of Representatives.
Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu was the football captain at his primary school. He was the best student in Human Anatomy during the mid-preclinical year and stood out in Surgery during the clinical year. He also finished his residency program in a record time of five years.
Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu is a well-known Minimal Access Surgeon in Nigeria, having educated many others in the area.
